Biography

Short Description

Donatus of Arezzo was a Christian bishop of Arezzo in Tuscany who is venerated as a saint and martyr. He belongs to the fourth century, a period in which the Church in Italy was emerging from the era of the great persecutions and then confronting the brief pagan restoration under the emperor Julian. Almost nothing about Donatus can be confirmed from strictly contemporary sources. No authentic letters, inscriptions, or conciliar subscriptions from his own hand are known to survive, and the narrative of his life depends on a Latin Passio of later date whose historical value is widely doubted by modern scholars. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that Arezzo preserved from an early time the memory of a bishop named Donatus, that he was honored as a martyr, and that his feast was fixed on 7 August, the date still given in the Roman Martyrology.

The traditional legend, which circulated in the Middle Ages and shaped art and liturgy in Tuscany, places his birth at Nicomedia in Asia Minor. It relates that he was brought to Rome and educated there, and that one of his fellow pupils was the future emperor Julian. After the death of his parents, Donatus is said to have given his property to the poor. Ordination as deacon and priest followed; some versions of the story connect these steps with Pope Julius I. When Julian, having become emperor, turned against the Church, Donatus left the city. He made his way to Arezzo in the company of a monk named Hilarianus (also called Hilarinus). The Christians of Arezzo chose Donatus as their bishop. Independent evidence for the sequence of fourth-century bishops of Arezzo is too fragmentary to confirm or deny this appointment, but the local tradition that he occupied the see has been continuous.

Hagiographers credited Donatus with numerous miracles during his episcopate. The best-known episode, frequently depicted in Tuscan art, concerns a glass chalice used at Mass. According to the story, hostile persons dashed the vessel to the ground so that it broke into pieces; Donatus gathered the fragments, prayed, and restored the chalice. Other wonders include the resuscitation of a dead person and the deliverance of the city from a dragon or serpent that had nested in a well and poisoned the water. Such tales belong to the common stock of late antique and medieval miracle stories and cannot be treated as historical reportage, but they explain why Donatus was invoked as a protector of Arezzo and why his image often shows him as a bishop holding a chalice.

The same Passio states that Donatus and Hilarianus were arrested during Julian’s reign by a prefect named Quadratianus. Hilarianus was scourged to death. Donatus was condemned and beheaded, traditionally on 7 August 362. The association with Julian supplies a dramatic contrast between the apostate emperor and his former schoolmate, but it also raises chronological problems and is not corroborated by independent fourth-century testimony. Whether Donatus died as a martyr in a formal persecution or was simply a revered bishop whose death was later cast in a martyrial mold remains an open question. In either case, the Church of Arezzo buried him with honor. His relics were later placed in the cathedral, which bears the joint dedication of Saints Peter and Donatus. In the fourteenth century a richly sculpted marble arch, the Arca di San Donato, was erected over the high altar to contain them.

Veneration of Donatus spread through Tuscany and beyond. He is the principal patron of the city of Arezzo. His feast on 7 August has been observed for many centuries. Churches, oratories, and place names dedicated to San Donato in central Italy attest to the popularity of his cult in the Middle Ages. Because so much of the written life is legendary, a careful account must distinguish the historically secure core—an early bishop of Arezzo commemorated as a saint on 7 August—from the colorful narrative that medieval readers knew. That narrative, however unhistorical in detail, is itself a historical fact: it formed the image of Donatus that painters, sculptors, and preachers transmitted for hundreds of years.
