Biography

Short Description

Donatus of Fiesole (also called Donat, Donato, or Donnchadh) was an Irish cleric, teacher, and Latin poet who became bishop of Fiesole in Tuscany in the ninth century. Contemporary documentation of his youth is lacking, and no verified year or town of birth survives. Later hagiography describes him as Irish and of noble family. In the early ninth century he left Ireland as a peregrinus pro Christo and traveled to Italy with a younger companion, Andrew, afterward venerated as Saint Andrew of Fiesole. Tradition holds that they went to Rome to visit the tombs of the apostles and that on the return journey they came to Fiesole, whose see was then vacant.

Medieval lives of Donatus relate that when clergy and people gathered to elect a bishop, the cathedral bells rang of themselves and a dove settled on the Irish stranger, which the assembly took as a sign of divine choice; he was then consecrated. The miraculous coloring of this story belongs to legend rather than to independently attested history, but a long episcopate at Fiesole is accepted. Donatus is generally placed in the see from the 820s until his death. A firm contemporary witness is his subscription, as Donatus Fesulanus episcopus, to the acts of a Roman synod held in 861 under Pope Nicholas I. He obtained confirmation of rights for his church from Carolingian rulers of the Kingdom of Italy and was remembered as a restorer of cathedral fabric and of learning.

Donatus was a man of letters. Latin verse attributed to him includes a metrical life of Saint Brigid of Kildare and an autobiographical epitaph in which he names himself as sprung from the blood of the Irish (Scotti), a scholar, and bishop of the Fiesolans. His companion Andrew served as archdeacon and is associated with the church of San Martino a Mensola near Fiesole; later tradition also links a sister of Andrew, sometimes called Brigid, with a hermitage in the same district. These Irish connections help explain why Donatus was commemorated not only in Tuscany but in Irish martyrologies, including the Martyrology of Donegal.

According to the received tradition he died at Fiesole in 876 and was buried in his cathedral, the church of Saint Romulus. His feast is kept on 22 October. Veneration grew from local Fiesolan cult and from Irish ecclesiastical memory; because he belongs to the age before the later papal canonization process, no individual pontiff is recorded as having canonized him. Relics have long been associated with the cathedral of Fiesole. Even when legendary episodes are set aside, Donatus remains one of the better-attested Irish scholar-bishops of Carolingian Italy.
