Biography

Short Description

Donatus, Romulus, Secundian, and their eighty-six companions are a group of early Christian martyrs commemorated in the Roman Martyrology as having suffered at Concordia in Venetia. The place is the Roman colony of Iulia Concordia, known today as Concordia Sagittaria in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy, not far from Aquileia. Tradition assigns their death to the persecution begun by the Emperor Diocletian in the early fourth century. The three named figures—Donatus, Romulus, and Secundian (also given as Secundianus)—stand at the head of a large company of unnamed fellow Christians put to death at the same site. No contemporary narrative of undisputed historical value survives to describe their arrests, trials, or the manner of their execution.

Almost nothing can be verified about their individual origins, occupations, or family circumstances. Later notices are brief and do not supply reliable acta. The Diocletianic persecution opened with imperial edicts in 303 and was felt in northern Italy, where Aquileia and the neighboring towns already possessed organized Christian communities. Concordia was a municipium on the road system of Venetia et Histria; archaeology has confirmed an early Christian presence there, including remains of a paleochristian basilica and cemetery, which provide a plausible setting for a sizable group of victims. Historians therefore accept an ancient local cult of martyrs at Concordia while remaining cautious about legendary elaborations that often attach to obscure martyr lists.

Their liturgical memory is fixed on 17 February. The Roman Martyrology records, under that date, the holy martyrs Donatus, Secundian, and Romulus, with eighty-six companions, at Concordia in Venetia. That entry reflects a cult already established in antiquity rather than a medieval invention. Like other martyrs of the pre-Constantinian age, they were never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or Tridentine type; their honours belong to the so-called pre-congregation saints, whose public veneration arose from popular and episcopal recognition of martyrdom.

Beyond the martyrological notice, remembrance of the group has remained largely local, associated with Concordia Sagittaria and its cathedral tradition. No trustworthy source records their birthplaces, whether they were clergy or laity, or any spouses or children. The year 304 is the date conventionally given in later calendars and popular hagiography for Diocletianic martyrs in Italy, though the ancient notices themselves say only that they suffered under Diocletian. Despite the sparsity of the evidence, Donatus, Romulus, Secundian, and their companions have been honoured for centuries as witnesses who died for the Christian faith in northern Italy at the close of the age of persecutions, shortly before the peace of the Church.
