Biography

Short Description

Saint Dorothea of Caesarea, also known in English as Saint Dorothy, is venerated in the Western Church as a virgin martyr of the early fourth century. Traditional accounts place her death at Caesarea in Cappadocia, then a city of the Roman Empire, during the persecution of Christians associated with the emperor Diocletian and his successors. The Roman Martyrology commemorates her on 6 February, and later hagiographical compilations commonly date her martyrdom to the year 311. No contemporary documentary record of her trial or execution survives. The Latin passiones that preserve her story are of later date and legendary character, and her cult is far more firmly established in Latin Christianity than in the Greek East, where she does not hold a comparable liturgical place. Historians therefore treat the biographical details of her life with caution, while acknowledging a long-standing February commemoration of a virgin martyr named Dorothea associated with Caesarea in Cappadocia.

According to the traditional narrative, Dorothea was a young Christian woman of Caesarea who had dedicated her virginity to Christ. Brought before a prefect, named in the legends Sapricius or Fabricius, she refused to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods. Two women who had previously abandoned the Christian faith, Christina and Callista, were sent to persuade her to recant; the legend states that she instead converted them, and that they were then tortured and put to death. Dorothea herself was stretched upon the rack and was offered marriage by the prefect if she would sacrifice; she refused and was condemned to be beheaded. The story presents her throughout as a consecrated virgin who would not marry, and there is no tradition that she had a spouse or children.

The episode that most strongly shaped her later cult occurred, according to the legend, on the way to execution. A young lawyer or notary named Theophilus mocked her profession of a heavenly Bridegroom and asked her to send him apples or roses from that Bridegroom’s garden. After Dorothea’s prayer, a child—understood in the tradition as an angel—appeared bearing a basket of apples and roses, although it was winter. Theophilus was converted to Christianity and later suffered martyrdom himself. This miracle, popularized in the West by medieval collections such as the Golden Legend of Jacobus de Voragine, became the basis of Dorothea’s iconography. She is typically shown with a basket of roses and apples, or accompanied by an angelic child carrying the same gifts, and she appears frequently in later medieval and Renaissance painting, stained glass, and books of hours.

Devotion to Saint Dorothea flourished especially in medieval Latin Europe. She was invoked as patron of gardeners, florists, and horticulture, in memory of the miraculous fruit and flowers, and also as patron of brides, newlyweds, midwives, and, in some local traditions, brewers. The city of Pescia in Italy numbered her among its patrons. Her feast on 6 February was widely kept in medieval calendars; she remains inscribed in the Roman Martyrology, though her feast was not retained in the General Roman Calendar after the twentieth-century revisions. She was venerated from an early period and was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later type. She is not recorded as a member of a religious order or as holding any episcopal or patriarchal office. Beyond the traditional association with Caesarea in Cappadocia, a year of birth, a burial place, and the names of her family cannot be verified from reliable historical sources.
