Biography

Short Description

Dorothea of Montau, also known as Dorothea of Marienwerder, was born in 1347 in the village of Groß Montau in Prussia, a land then governed by the Teutonic Order and now situated in northern Poland. Her family belonged to the Dutch colonists who had been settled in the region; her father Wilhelm was a farmer. Accounts compiled after her death describe her as unusually devout from childhood, given to prayer, fasting, and reported visionary experiences. In her mid-teens she was married to Adalbert, a swordsmith of Danzig, in a match typical of her social standing.

The marriage lasted more than twenty years and was marked by both fertility and grief. Dorothea and Adalbert had nine children, eight of whom died in infancy or childhood. Their one surviving daughter, Gertrude, later entered the Benedictine convent at Kulm. The couple made several pilgrimages, notably to Aachen. Later sources close to Dorothea claimed that Adalbert was at times severe or violent toward her and that she interpreted these trials as a share in the Passion. After he died around 1390, she was at last free to embrace a life of enclosure.

With the consent of the local bishop and the Teutonic authorities, Dorothea was walled into an anchoress’s cell attached to the cathedral of Marienwerder, an event traditionally placed in 1393. She remained there until her death, living in extreme austerity: prolonged fasts, a hair shirt, self-flagellation, and almost continual prayer. She received Communion far more often than was customary for a laywoman. She spoke of frequent visions of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the saints, and of interior revelations concerning the reform of the Church, the conversion of sinners, and the spiritual welfare of Prussia and the Teutonic Order.

Her confessor and biographer was Johannes Marienwerder, a canon and theologian of the cathedral. He recorded her sayings in the vernacular and recast them in Latin, producing a life of Dorothea, the Septililium (a treatise on seven special graces she said she had received), and collections of visions ordered according to the liturgical calendar. These texts, written in her last years and immediately after her death, formed the documentary basis of her cult and presented her as a prophetess and victim soul whose sufferings were offered for the Church and for her native land.

Dorothea died on 25 June 1394 and was buried in the cathedral. Pilgrims gathered at her tomb and miracles were reported. The Teutonic Knights, seeking a Prussian saint analogous to Bridget of Sweden, promoted inquiries toward canonization in the early fifteenth century, but the cause was never concluded, first because of the Order’s political collapse and later because of the Reformation. Local Catholic veneration nevertheless survived. In 1976 Pope Paul VI confirmed her ancient cult, an act received as her beatification. She is commemorated on 25 June and is honored as a patron of Prussia.
