Biography

Short Description

Dosifeya of Kyiv, also known in church Slavonic and later literature as Dosithea or Dosifeia, is remembered in Eastern Orthodox tradition as an eighteenth-century monastic recluse of Kyiv. The outline of her life is known almost entirely from later hagiographical accounts rather than from a dense contemporary archive, and many particulars remain uncertain. Those accounts place her birth about 1721 in the Ryazan region of the Russian Empire, in the noble Tyapkin family, and give her the secular name Daria. Her father is described as a voivode. In her mid-teens her parents arranged a marriage for her. Unwilling to marry, she left home in secret, cut her hair, put on male clothing, and sought to enter monastic life under a man’s name.

According to the received story she was accepted at the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, the ancient cave monastery on the Dnieper that was the principal monastic centre of the region. Living as the monk Dosifei, she spent many years in reclusion, associated in tradition with a cave cell or with one of the Lavra’s hermitages, and practised the severe fasting, vigil, and silence expected of a recluse. In that hidden life she gained a reputation for spiritual discernment. Pilgrims and monks came to the elder for counsel while believing they were speaking with a man. Russian spiritual literature later connected this recluse with the vocation of Prokhor Moshnin, the future Saint Seraphim of Sarov: as a young man in 1776 he is said to have visited the Lavra and to have been directed by Dosifei to settle at Sarov. Because the chronology is tight and the narratives were written down later, historians treat that identification as pious tradition rather than as a fully documented fact.

At an unknown date her identity as a woman became known to the monastic authorities. She was then removed from the male lavra and transferred to the Holy Ascension Florovsky Convent in Kyiv, a women’s monastery, where she continued to live in seclusion as a nun. She died on 25 September 1776 and was buried at that convent. The date of death is the most firmly repeated point in the tradition; the earlier chronology of her disguise and of any meeting with the future Seraphim of Sarov is much less secure.

In Orthodox calendars she is commemorated on 25 September, corresponding in the modern civil calendar to 8 October, and is numbered among the venerable recluses of Kyiv, sometimes in connection with the synaxis of the saints of the Kiev Caves. She is honoured especially in Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox usage as an example of hidden monastic life. Independent archival confirmation of the legendary details of her male disguise remains limited, but the core picture of a noblewoman of the Ryazan region who ended her life as a Kyivan monastic recluse in the mid-eighteenth century is the account under which Dosifeya of Kyiv has been remembered.
