Biography

Short Description

Dositej Vasić was born Dragutin Vasić on 5 December 1878 in the village of Beloševac, near Kragujevac, in the Principality of Serbia. He received his primary education locally and attended gymnasium in Kragujevac before entering the Orthodox theological seminary in Belgrade. He was then sent to the Kiev Theological Academy, a leading center of Orthodox theology in the Russian Empire, and completed his studies there in 1904. He continued his education in Germany, attending lectures in Berlin and Leipzig. He took monastic vows and received the name Dositej, committing himself to the celibate life required of Orthodox bishops, and was ordained to the diaconate and priesthood. He taught at the Belgrade seminary and was regarded as one of the better-educated Serbian churchmen of his generation.

In 1913 the Serbian Orthodox Church elected him Bishop of Niš, and he was consecrated that year. His episcopate in Niš unfolded against the Balkan Wars and the First World War. Southern Serbia was occupied during the war, church life was disrupted, and the bishop shared the hardships of his flock. After 1918, in the new Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, he took part in the reorganization of church administration. In 1931 the patriarchate established a metropolitan see in Zagreb for the Orthodox population of Croatia, Slavonia, and neighboring regions, and Dositej was appointed the first Metropolitan of Zagreb. He moved to a city that was a major Catholic cultural center, where Orthodox Serbs were a minority, and worked to organize parishes, support clergy, and give the new metropolitanate a stable institutional form through the 1930s, as political tensions in Yugoslavia intensified.

The Axis invasion of April 1941 destroyed the Yugoslav state and led to the proclamation of the Independent State of Croatia under the Ustaše. That regime pursued persecution, forced conversion, expulsion, and killing directed at Serbs and set out to eliminate or replace the Serbian Orthodox hierarchy on its territory. Metropolitan Dositej did not abandon Zagreb. In May 1941 he was arrested by the Ustaše, imprisoned, and tortured. Church accounts describe severe beatings and the public humiliation of the metropolitan, including the tearing out of his beard. The intention was both to break him personally and to intimidate the Orthodox community. After the legitimate hierarchy had been removed, the regime later installed a collaborationist Croatian Orthodox Church. Dositej’s health collapsed under interrogation and confinement.

In time he was transferred from Croatian prisons and allowed to go to Belgrade, but he never recovered from the injuries and ill-treatment he had suffered. He died in Belgrade on 13 January 1945 as a consequence of that torture. The Serbian Orthodox Church subsequently glorified him as a hieromartyr, numbering him among the New Martyrs of the Second World War. He is remembered as the first metropolitan of Zagreb and as a bishop who remained with his diocese until his arrest and who died as a result of the persecution that followed.
