Biography

Short Description

Dositeos Kutateli was a hierarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church whose epithet indicates his connection to the metropolitan see of Kutaisi, the principal city of the historical kingdom of Imereti in western Georgia. In Georgian ecclesiastical usage the bishop or metropolitan of Kutaisi has long been designated Kutateli. Beyond that association, verifiable details of his personal life, including family origins, education, and the precise years of his birth and death, are not attested in widely accessible historical literature. He belongs among regional church figures whose memory, if preserved at all, survives mainly in local Georgian sources rather than in translated synaxaria or standard encyclopedic works.

The see of Kutaisi occupied an important place in the structure of the Georgian Church. Christianity had been established in Iberia in the fourth century and spread throughout the Georgian lands, which developed a distinctive liturgical and literary tradition in the Georgian language. Western Georgia, with its own political history under the Bagrationi rulers of Imereti, maintained metropolitan centers that oversaw monasteries, parish life, and the training of clergy. Occupants of the Kutaisi throne took part in the broader life of the autocephalous Church of Georgia, whose catholicos-patriarch resided at Mtskheta. Periods of political division, foreign invasion, and later incorporation into the Russian Empire affected the administration of western Georgian dioceses, though specific actions of this Dositeos in those events cannot be confirmed from general knowledge.

As an Orthodox hierarch, Dositeos Kutateli would have been drawn from the monastic clergy, in accordance with the long-standing Eastern Christian requirement that bishops be unmarried monks. His duties would have included celebration of the Divine Liturgy according to the Byzantine rite as used in Georgia, ordination of priests and deacons, supervision of monastic communities in the Kutaisi region, and pastoral care of the faithful. Georgian churchmen of the early modern and modern periods often faced the dual tasks of preserving national ecclesiastical identity and navigating relations with neighboring Islamic powers or with the Russian Holy Synod after the early nineteenth century. No reliable account of writings, miracles, or martyrdom has been identified for this individual in standard references.

Because of the limited documentation it is not possible to state whether Dositeos Kutateli has been formally glorified as a saint by the Georgian Orthodox Church, whether he is commemorated on a particular feast day, or whether he is regarded as patron of any place or cause. Georgian hagiography is rich in local saints, including hierarchs who suffered during invasions or who distinguished themselves by piety and learning, yet each case requires specific attestation. In the absence of such attestation his biography remains that of an obscure but representative figure of the western Georgian episcopate.
