Biography

Short Description

Saint Drausius (also known as Drausinus or Drausin) was a seventh-century bishop of Soissons in Neustria, in the Frankish kingdom. Traditional hagiographical notices state that he was born of a noble family at Soissons itself and was formed for the clerical life under Saint Anseric (Ansaricus), bishop of that see. After this ecclesiastical education he entered the service of the church of Soissons and, in the middle decades of the seventh century, was chosen bishop of the same city. Later medieval and early modern calendars commonly place the beginning of his episcopate around the later 650s. Contemporary documentary evidence for his career is sparse, as is usual for many Merovingian bishops; what is known rests chiefly on liturgical commemoration, local tradition at Soissons, and brief notices in later martyrologies and episcopal catalogues.

As bishop, Drausius was remembered for personal holiness and for substantial foundations rather than for involvement in the factional politics of the later Merovingian court. He is credited with establishing a monastery dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary (Notre-Dame) at Soissons and a house for nuns, and with building or restoring churches in his diocese. These acts belong to the wider pattern of episcopal patronage of monastic life in seventh-century Neustria. His reputation in later centuries was that of a pastor of austere life whose intercession was sought in situations of conflict and spiritual affliction. No lengthy contemporary vita survives, and details of administration, synods, or relations with neighbouring sees are not securely attested.

Drausius died at Soissons about 674 and was buried in the church of the monastery of Notre-Dame which he had founded. A local cult developed at his tomb. His feast is kept on 7 March. In the High Middle Ages the shrine at Soissons attracted pilgrims who invoked him as a helper of those about to fight, of champions, and of persons seeking justice, and also against demonic possession. A well-attested episode in English history records that Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury, visited the shrine of Saint Drausius at Soissons in 1169, while in exile, to pray before returning to England and the conflict that awaited him. The association of Drausius with those facing combat or judicial ordeal thus entered wider Latin Christendom through this visit and through later liturgical and hagiographical transmission.

Because the historical dossier is thin, claims about precise chronology, family, or miracles should be treated with caution. Birth in Soissons, education under Anseric, the episcopate, the Notre-Dame foundation, burial there, death around 674, and the 7 March feast are the elements that recur in the more sober tradition. Formal papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense did not apply; he belongs to the large number of Merovingian holy bishops whose cult was established by local veneration and subsequent liturgical reception. Relics associated with him remained at Soissons through the Middle Ages, and he continued to be named among the patrons of that city.
