Biography

Short Description

Dryhthelm (also spelled Drithelm or Drythelm) was a Northumbrian layman of the late seventh century whose near-death vision of the afterlife was recorded by the Venerable Bede in Book V, chapter 12 of the Ecclesiastical History of the English People. Bede places the episode in the reign of King Aldfrith of Northumbria (685–705) and identifies the man’s home district as Incuneningum, generally equated with Cunningham in what is now Ayrshire. At the time he fell ill, Dryhthelm was a married householder of devout habits, with a wife and children. No reliable source records his parentage, a precise place of birth, or a year of birth, and nothing independent of Bede survives about his earlier life.

According to Bede, Dryhthelm was seized by a mortal sickness and appeared to die at nightfall. Those watching the body were terrified the next morning when he suddenly sat up and spoke. He related that a guide of shining countenance and bright clothing had led him through four regions of the other world. First they came to a valley of immense length, one side of which burned with fire while the other was locked in hail and snow; countless souls were tossed from one torment to the other. The guide said this was not hell but a place of temporary punishment for those who had delayed repentance until death and who would yet be saved at the Judgment. They next entered utter darkness, where a bottomless pit belched flame, souls rose like sparks and fell back, and foul spirits threatened Dryhthelm until the guide returned; this, he was told, was the mouth of hell, from which none come back. Turning eastward they passed a vast wall into a broad, fragrant plain filled with light and people in white robes—the resting place of the good who were not yet perfect. Beyond it Dryhthelm perceived a still more glorious realm of song and light, the kingdom of heaven, which he was not allowed to enter. The guide then sent him back to his body with the charge to live thereafter as one destined for the company of the blessed.

On recovering, Dryhthelm divided his property into three parts, giving one third to his wife, one third to his children, and one third to the poor. He then went to the monastery of Melrose (Mailros) on the River Tweed, received the monastic tonsure, and occupied a private cell provided by the abbot. There he adopted a life of severe austerity, remaining long hours in prayer and frequently standing in the Tweed reciting psalms, even in winter when he had to break the ice. When others marvelled at his endurance he answered that he had seen greater cold and greater heat. Bede records that King Aldfrith, a man of learning, often came to Melrose to hear him, and that a priest named Haemgils, who later lived as a hermit in Ireland, heard the vision from Dryhthelm himself and was Bede’s principal informant.

Bede does not give the year of Dryhthelm’s death or the place of his burial; he presents him only as having persevered in this penitential life at Melrose. The narrative became one of the most widely copied early-medieval vision texts and helped shape Latin and vernacular descriptions of an intermediate state later associated with purgatory. Dryhthelm has been commemorated as a saint in some medieval and modern calendars, commonly on 1 September, though he was never the object of a formal papal canonization. Beyond Bede’s chapter, contemporary evidence is lacking, and later hagiographical additions should be treated with caution.
