Biography

Short Description

Saint Dula is an early Christian martyr whose memory is preserved almost entirely by a short notice in the Roman Martyrology. That entry commemorates her on 25 March and records that she suffered at Nicomedia, where she was a slave and was slain by her own mistress for her faith in Christ, thereby receiving the crown of martyrdom. No ancient passio, inscription, or independent narrative has been securely identified as referring to her. Her year of birth, the year of her death, the name of her owner, and the precise circumstances of the killing are all unrecorded. Later compilers of saints’ lives, including the Bollandists, have generally been able to add little beyond the martyrology text itself.

Nicomedia, in the province of Bithynia in northwestern Asia Minor, was one of the principal cities of the later Roman Empire and at times an imperial residence. It was also an important centre of Christian life and of persecution. The city’s association with the Great Persecution under Diocletian is well known, yet the martyrology does not assign Dula’s passion to that or to any other named campaign. It is therefore not possible to date her martyrdom more closely than to the Roman imperial period in which Christians in Bithynia could be killed for their religion. That she is described as a slave put to death by her mistress rather than by a public magistrate is consistent with private household violence against Christian servants, a pattern attested in other early martyr accounts, though none of the personal details of Dula’s case survive.

Her cult appears to have been modest. Inclusion in the Roman Martyrology ensured that her name was read in the liturgy on her feast day, but she did not become the subject of an elaborate legendary cycle, nor is she known as the titular saint of major churches or as the patron of particular places, professions, illnesses, or causes. In Eastern calendars a male martyr named Dulas (sometimes rendered Dula) of Cilicia is commemorated on a different date; he is a distinct figure and should not be conflated with the Nicomedian slave woman.

Because the sources are so sparse, a responsible account must remain largely negative: parentage, the manner of any accusation, and the place of burial are unknown. What the Church has retained is the memory that a Christian slave woman at Nicomedia sealed her faith with her blood at the hands of her mistress and was thereafter honoured as a martyr. That bare fact, transmitted through the martyrological tradition, is the foundation of her cult.
