Biography

Short Description

The martyr Dulas (also rendered Doulas in Greek sources) is known from the Roman Martyrology and the Byzantine synaxaria as a Christian who suffered at Zephyrium in Cilicia in the later third or very early fourth century. The emperor named in the accounts is Maximian (Maximianus), whose authority in the East and whose association with the Great Persecution place the events in the period roughly 285–305. No contemporary inscription, imperial rescript, or secular chronicle mentions Dulas; the information derives entirely from later liturgical and martyrological compilations. Nothing reliable is recorded of his birth, parentage, occupation, or the circumstances of his conversion.

According to the traditional narrative preserved in Greek, Dulas was a pious Christian of virtuous life who was arrested for his faith and brought before a governor named Maximus. He refused to sacrifice to the gods. He was then subjected to torture: the Roman Martyrology states that he was beaten with rods and endured further torments; Eastern accounts add that he was hung from a tree and scourged. After these sufferings he was confined in prison, where he died of his injuries. The authorities ordered his corpse thrown to wild animals, which, according to the legend, would not devour it. Local Christians then recovered the body and buried it.

The feast of Dulas is kept on 15 June in both the Roman Martyrology (“at Zephyrium in Cilicia”) and in Orthodox usage. He is not known to have held any ecclesiastical office, to have belonged to a monastic community, or to have left writings. No ancient church or major shrine dedicated to him is documented in surviving sources, and no specific patronages of places, trades, illnesses, or groups are attached to his name in standard directories of saints. His cult remained essentially that of a named local martyr of the Diocletianic-era persecutions.

A second, distinct figure of the same name, Dulas the Passion-Bearer of Egypt, appears on some Eastern calendars on or near the same day. That Dulas was a monk and gardener in an Egyptian monastery who died after being falsely accused of theft and beaten by his fellow monks; the stolen vessels were later found and his relics were said to work miracles. The Cilician martyr and the Egyptian monk should not be conflated. For the Cilician Dulas, the year of birth, the exact year of death, his native city, and any family relationships remain unknown. Later medieval elaborations, if they existed, have not survived in a form that can be verified from reliable historical or hagiographical collections.

Thus the historical Dulas of Zephyrium stands as one of the many named but otherwise obscure victims of the late Roman persecutions in Asia Minor, remembered in the calendar but without a recoverable biography beyond the conventional outline of arrest, torture, death in prison, and burial by the faithful. Historians of hagiography treat the passion as typical of its genre rather than as an independently corroborated dossier.
