Biography

Short Description

John Duns Scotus, commonly known as the Subtle Doctor (Doctor Subtilis), was a Scottish Catholic priest, Franciscan friar, university master, philosopher, and theologian of the High Middle Ages. He is ranked with Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventure, and William of Ockham among the most influential scholastic thinkers of that era. He was born in the mid-thirteenth century in the Kingdom of Scotland; later tradition identifies his birthplace as the town of Duns in Berwickshire. The exact year of his birth is not recorded in surviving documents and is only inferred from later career dates. He entered the Order of Friars Minor and was ordained to the priesthood on 17 March 1291 at the Franciscan house of Saint Andrew in Northampton. He studied at Oxford, where the Franciscans maintained a prominent studium, and there is evidence that he also spent time at Cambridge.

By about 1300 Scotus was lecturing on Peter Lombard's Sentences at Oxford. He subsequently moved to the University of Paris, then the foremost centre of theological study in Latin Europe. In 1303 he was required to leave Paris after he and other Franciscans declined to endorse King Philip IV's appeal against Pope Boniface VIII. He returned to Paris after the pope's death and resumed teaching, incepting as master of theology. In 1307 the order assigned him to the Franciscan studium in Cologne. He died in that city on 8 November 1308 and was buried in the church of the Friars Minor, today known as the Minoritenkirche, where his tomb remains. As a Franciscan he lived under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience; no spouse or children are recorded.

Scotus's literary output consists mainly of academic exercises: commentaries on the Sentences, quodlibetal questions, and shorter treatises. The most important is the Ordinatio (sometimes called the Opus Oxoniense), a revised and expanded commentary begun at Oxford and continued at Paris. Related texts include the Lectura, the Reportatio Parisiensis, and the Quodlibetal Questions. Philosophical works include De primo principio, an argument for a first infinite being, and a set of Theoremata whose authenticity has been debated. In metaphysics he argued that being is a univocal concept applicable to God and creatures, that a formal distinction can obtain between realities that are inseparable in a thing, and that individuals are constituted by a positive principle of thisness (haecceitas). In natural theology he developed a proof of God's existence from the possibility of an essentially ordered series of causes. In Mariology he defended the thesis that Mary was preserved from original sin at the first moment of her conception by a unique application of Christ's merits, a view that later became the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

The school that formed around his writings, known as Scotism, was a major force in late medieval and early modern Catholic thought, especially among Franciscans. His positions were discussed and often opposed by William of Ockham and by Thomists. Interest in Scotus revived in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries among historians of philosophy and among Catholic theologians. Pope John Paul II confirmed his cult and beatified him in 1993. The Catholic Church observes his feast on 8 November. He was never raised to the universal calendar as a canonized saint, but he is venerated as Blessed John Duns Scotus.
