Biography

Short Description

Durand de Bredons, whose name is also written Durand de Bredon, was an eleventh-century Benedictine monk and abbot from Auvergne in the south of the Kingdom of France. He is known from his toponymic surname as a native of Bredons, a mountain village in the Cantal near Murat, today within the commune of Albepierre-Bredons. No contemporary source preserves a year of birth, and modern notices that offer round figures such as the beginning of the eleventh century are conjectural. He entered the Benedictine monastic life in a region already marked by the abbey of Saint-Géraud d'Aurillac and by the expanding Cluniac reform. Later tradition links him with Aurillac or with Cluny itself; the surviving evidence is too thin to reconstruct his novitiate or early offices with certainty.

By the middle of the eleventh century the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Moissac, an old foundation on the Tarn in Quercy, had suffered a long period of decline and lay interference. In 1047–1048 the monastery was placed under the Cluniac observance, in the closing years of the abbacy of Odilo of Cluny and at the outset of that of Hugh of Cluny. Durand was made abbot of Moissac in 1048 and governed the house until his death, a tenure of some twenty-four years. He was thus the first abbot to restore regular Benedictine life there according to Cluniac customs and to integrate Moissac into the family of Cluny. Charters and later abbey histories present him as the restorer of discipline and of the temporal estate: donations accumulated, dependent priories and churches were acquired or recovered across Aquitaine and Languedoc, and papal protection was sought for the community's rights and exemptions.

Moissac under Durand became one of the principal Cluniac centres of the Midi, sometimes described as a southern counterpart to Cluny. The material recovery of the abbey in his time created the conditions for the great Romanesque rebuilding that followed. The cloister whose inscription records completion in 1100, in the abbacy of Ansquitil, and the celebrated south portal of the abbey church belong to the generation after Durand; they should not be attributed to his own building campaigns, yet they stand on the institutional foundation he laid. After his death he was succeeded by Abbot Hunaud and then by Ansquitil. Durand died in 1072, on 8 July according to the date transmitted in monastic necrologies; a few older notices give 1071. He is generally held to have ended his life at Moissac, the monastery he had ruled for a quarter of a century.

Durand de Bredons was never the object of a formal canonization or of a universally observed feast, and he does not appear with a cult in the principal martyrologies. His memory is that of a reforming abbot rather than of a thaumaturge. Knowledge of his life depends on the cartulary tradition of Moissac, on Cluniac and papal documents of the mid-eleventh century, and on early modern compilations such as Gallia Christiana. Personal details—family, exact birth date, and many acts of daily government—remain unknown. His historical importance is nonetheless clear: by binding Moissac to Cluny and by restoring its regular life, he helped make that abbey a lasting centre of Benedictine monasticism and, indirectly, of Romanesque art in southwestern France.
