Biography

Short Description

Saint Dwynwen (also known as Dwyn or Donwen) is a Welsh saint traditionally placed in the fifth century and venerated as the patron saint of lovers in Wales. Later medieval genealogies and hagiographical tradition present her as one of the many children of Brychan, the legendary king of Brycheiniog in what is now southern Wales. Almost nothing about her life can be confirmed from contemporary historical sources. Her cult is known principally through place-names, later Welsh literature, and the medieval pilgrimage attached to her church on Anglesey. The chief site linked with her memory is Ynys Llanddwyn (Llanddwyn Island), a small tidal island off the southwestern coast of Anglesey (Ynys Môn), whose name means the church of Dwynwen.

The best-known story of Dwynwen survives in varying forms in later Welsh tradition rather than in an early, historically secure vita. It recounts that she fell in love with a young man named Maelon Dafodrill. In one widely repeated version her father forbade the match. Dwynwen prayed to be delivered from her unhappy love; an angel appeared and gave her a potion that caused Maelon to be frozen or turned to ice. She was then granted three wishes: that Maelon be restored, that God watch over true lovers so that they might find happiness, and that she herself should never be obliged to marry. She thereafter took a vow of virginity and withdrew from the world. Other retellings present Maelon as having attempted to force himself upon her, after which she fled and received divine aid. These narratives belong to legend and cannot be treated as historical biography, but they explain why she came to be invoked by lovers.

Tradition holds that Dwynwen established a church or small religious community on Llanddwyn Island and lived there as a consecrated woman until her death. A holy well on the island, Ffynnon Dwynwen, became a focus of pilgrimage. Folklore claimed that the movements of eels or fish in the well could be read as omens of a lover’s fidelity or of the success of a match, and visitors also sought healing. In the later Middle Ages the church of Saint Dwynwen on the island was an important pilgrimage destination, attracting offerings and the interest of Welsh princes and, later, of Tudor notables. Substantial ruins of a sixteenth-century church still stand on the island, which forms part of the Newborough Warren landscape on Anglesey. In some traditions she is also remembered as a healer of sick animals.

Her feast day is 25 January, known in Welsh as Dydd Santes Dwynwen. In modern Wales the day has been promoted as a national celebration of love, analogous to Saint Valentine’s Day. She was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; her cult is of the local, pre-Congregation kind typical of early Celtic saints, grounded in church dedication, well-cult, and popular devotion rather than in a Roman process. Reliable evidence does not record a precise year of birth or death, a named religious order in the later canonical sense, or a documented spouse or children. The consistent tradition is that she remained unmarried and lived a consecrated life. She is not recorded as having held any episcopal or patriarchal office.
