Biography

Short Description

Eadburh of Bicester (also recorded as Edburg, Edburga, or Eadburga) is an obscure Anglo-Saxon saint whose cult is attested in Oxfordshire in the later Middle Ages rather than in any contemporary seventh-century source. Almost nothing about her life can be established from documents of her own era. The traditions that survive were written down centuries later, and they are entangled with the legends of other Mercian royal women who bore the same or similar names. She is commemorated as a nun and virgin, and later calendars assign her the feast day of 18 July. The parish church of St Edburg at Bicester preserves her dedication, and she is regarded as the patron saint of that town.

According to later medieval legend, Eadburh was a daughter of the pagan King Penda of Mercia, who ruled in the mid-seventh century, and a sister of Saint Eadgyth (Edith) of Aylesbury. In this tradition she received the religious veil and lived as a nun in association with a community at Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. Penda’s historically attested children did, after his death in 655, belong to a generation in which several Mercian royal women entered monastic life, so the general outline is not intrinsically implausible. No early source, however, names a daughter Eadburh of Penda, and modern scholarship treats the genealogy as unproven and very probably a product of later hagiographical invention intended to give a local saint a royal Mercian pedigree.

The medieval Augustinian canons of Bicester Priory, a house founded in the late twelfth century by Gilbert Basset and dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Eadburh, claimed to possess her relics. They appear to have identified their patron with a woman whose name was fossilized in the nearby place-name Adderbury, from Old English Eadburgæ byrig, “Eadburh’s fortified place.” The canons then equated this Eadburh with the supposed sister of Edith of Aylesbury. Relics associated with her were enshrined at the priory. A skull believed to be hers is said to have been taken to Flanders around 1500. The priory was dissolved in the sixteenth century and the shrine did not survive as a working cult centre, though the town church retained her name.

Because of the poverty of early evidence, Eadburh of Bicester remains a shadowy figure even by the standards of Anglo-Saxon local saints. No reliable year of birth or death, no contemporary vita, and no burial place firmly datable to her own lifetime have come down to us. What can be said with confidence is that a cult of a saint named Eadburh existed in Oxfordshire in the high Middle Ages, that it was promoted by Bicester Priory, that her name is independently preserved in local toponymy, and that later writers folded her into the family of the seventh-century Mercian kings. She should not be confused with other Anglo-Saxon saints of the same name, including Eadburh of Winchester, Eadburh of Thanet, and Eadburh of Pershore, each of whom belongs to a different region and, in several cases, a different century.
