Biography

Short Description

Eberhard VI von Nellenburg, known in German as Eberhard der Selige (Eberhard the Blessed), was an eleventh-century Swabian count, monastic founder, and Benedictine monk. He belonged to the counts of Nellenburg, a leading noble family of the Duchy of Swabia whose ancestral castle stood in the Hegau, north of Lake Constance, in territory that today lies in Baden-Württemberg. The family held comital rights in the Zürichgau and Thurgau. Eberhard was a son of Count Eberhard of Nellenburg (often distinguished as Eberhard V, and also called Eppo) and of Hedwig. No contemporary record preserves an exact year or place of his birth; later estimates that place it in the early eleventh century remain conjectural.

In the middle decades of the eleventh century Eberhard ranked among the notable lay princes of the region under the Salian emperors. Together with his wife Ita he founded the Benedictine monastery of Allerheiligen (All Saints) at Schaffhausen on the High Rhine. The house was richly endowed with lands and rights from the Nellenburg patrimony and developed into an important abbey, later enjoying imperial status. The foundation belongs to the broader wave of noble monastic patronage in eleventh-century Swabia and eventually became associated with the Hirsau reform, though that alignment was completed under Eberhard's successors after his death. Charter evidence rather than narrative vitae forms the principal documentation of his public career.

Eberhard and Ita had several children. Their son Burkhard succeeded to the county, continued the family's patronage of Allerheiligen, and himself later entered the monastery. Other sons and daughters are attested in the sources, some of whom also chose religious life. Ita's own family background is not securely established; medieval and modern writers have proposed links to the counts of Calw or of Kirchberg, but these remain uncertain. In his later years Eberhard resigned secular authority, completed further endowments, and took the Benedictine habit in his own foundation, living as a monk at Allerheiligen. Ita likewise adopted a religious way of life and came to be venerated locally as blessed.

Eberhard died at the monastery in Schaffhausen. Monastic tradition and necrological notices point to late March, with the year given in surviving accounts as 1078 or 1079. He was buried at Allerheiligen. A regional cult honoring him as the Blessed developed at the abbey and in the town; his feast appears on 25 March in some Catholic calendars and martyrological compilations. No papal canonization or formal beatification in the later canonical sense is recorded; veneration remained essentially local. The former abbey of Allerheiligen, whose church and cloister survive as a major historical monument in Schaffhausen, continues to be the principal site associated with his memory. Because contemporary biographical writing is scarce, many personal details of his life cannot be verified beyond the evidence of charters, later monastic tradition, and the family's well-documented role in Swabian history.
