Biography

Short Description

Ebrulf, known in French as Évroult or Evroul and in Latin as Ebrulfus, was a Frankish hermit and monastic founder of the sixth century, honoured as a saint in the Catholic Church. Medieval tradition, preserved chiefly in a tenth-century vita and in the twelfth-century Historia Ecclesiastica of Orderic Vitalis, holds that he was born of a noble family at Bayeux in Neustria. As a young man he lived as a courtier in the household of the Merovingian king Childebert I. The hagiographers present him as already notable at court for austerity, almsgiving, and resistance to the customary vices of palace life. He married a woman of comparable piety. After some years the couple, by mutual consent, separated in order to embrace the religious life; Ebrulf then distributed his remaining goods to the poor.

He first entered the monastery of Deux-Jumeaux (the Two Twins) near Bayeux. Desiring a more hidden and austere life, he left that community with a band of companions—later writers speak of some fifteen monks—and settled in the forest of Ouche, a remote and dangerous woodland in the region that later formed the Norman dioceses of Lisieux and Sées. The forest was infested with brigands. According to the vitae, Ebrulf’s preaching and example converted a number of these outlaws, some of whom joined his eremitical group. In the forest he established a monastery that became the origin of the later Abbey of Saint-Évroult at what is now Saint-Évroult-Notre-Dame-du-Bois. Tradition also credits him with founding several dependent cells in the surrounding woods.

He governed this community as abbot for the rest of his life. The conventional date of his death is 596, and his feast is kept on 29 December, the day recorded in the Roman Martyrology, which commemorates him as an abbot in the pays d’Ouche in Neustria. Because the narrative sources are late and the abbey’s continuous archival history begins only after its eleventh-century restoration, historians treat many biographical details with caution; the sixth-century chronology associated with Childebert I and the year 596 remains the received hagiographical account rather than a fully documented modern reconstruction.

The monastery suffered severely in the Viking raids of the ninth and tenth centuries. The community was dispersed, and relics of Ebrulf were carried to other houses, among them Rebais. In the mid-eleventh century the abbey was refounded as a Benedictine monastery and became one of the principal intellectual centres of Normandy; Orderic Vitalis, its most famous monk, devoted considerable space to the founder’s memory. Ebrulf’s cult is thus closely bound to the history of Saint-Évroult. He belongs to the large number of Merovingian monastic saints whose veneration was established by popular and local episcopal cultus long before the later process of papal canonization, and no individual pope is recorded as having formally canonized him.
