Biography

Short Description

Saint Edburga of Minster-in-Thanet, whose name also appears as Eadburh, Eadburga, and Bugga, was an Anglo-Saxon abbess of the late seventh and eighth centuries and the head of the monastery of Minster-in-Thanet in Kent. After her death she was honoured as a saint in the English church. Later medieval tradition, followed by a number of modern writers, identifies her as a daughter of Centwine, king of the West Saxons in the later seventh century, a ruler who is himself said to have laid down his crown and entered the monastic life. That identification rests in part on the equation of the Minster abbess with a noblewoman named Bugga, daughter of Centwine, for whom Aldhelm of Malmesbury composed a poem on the dedication of a church. Other evidence ties the abbesses of Minster more closely to the Kentish royal family. The house had been founded in the later seventh century by Domne Eafe (Eormenburh), a Kentish princess, on land granted by King Ecgberht of Kent as compensation for the murder of her brothers; her daughter Mildrith (Saint Mildred) became abbess, and Edburga succeeded Mildrith.

Edburga succeeded Saint Mildred as abbess of Minster-in-Thanet in the early eighth century. In the course of a long abbacy she is credited with constructing a new church at Minster, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, and with translating the relics of Saint Mildred into that church. Minster-in-Thanet was among the more important female communities of early Christian England. Like other royal minsters of the age it combined liturgical life with the education of the well-born, the copying of books, and the exercise of hospitality and patronage. Contemporary letters show that Edburga was literate and that her community could produce or procure high-quality manuscripts.

The most secure window onto her life is her place in the correspondence of Saint Boniface, the West Saxon missionary in Frisia and Germany. Boniface wrote to Abbess Eadburh to thank her for presents of books and vestments and to ask her to have the Epistles of Saint Peter copied for him in letters of gold, a request that attests both her means and her reputation for learning and craftsmanship. Letters also survive between Boniface and an abbess called Bugga, whom many historians regard as the same woman. Bugga sought his counsel on spiritual matters and on a possible pilgrimage to Rome; Boniface at one stage advised postponement because of insecurity on the routes through the Frankish lands and Italy, including the threat associated with Saracen raids. Through these exchanges the Kentish monastery took part in the web of prayer, gift, and book circulation that bound English houses to the Anglo-Saxon mission on the Continent.

Edburga died in 751 and was buried at Minster-in-Thanet. Her principal feast is kept on 13 December. She was venerated as a saint from an early period by local and monastic cult rather than by any later papal process of canonization. In the centuries that followed, the relics of the Thanet saints were translated more than once, as Viking attack, monastic decline, and subsequent refoundation reshaped the religious map of Kent; later tradition connects her remains with Minster and with churches in Canterbury. Apart from the Boniface letters and notices in later calendars and legendaries, little can be verified about her birth, childhood, or daily rule, and scholars continue to discuss whether Eadburh of Minster and Bugga daughter of Centwine were one person or two. What remains clear is her role as a learned abbess who linked a Kentish royal monastery with the wider English and continental church of the eighth century.
