Biography

Short Description

Edel Mary Quinn was born on 14 September 1907 in Kanturk, County Cork, Ireland, the daughter of Charles Quinn, a bank official, and Louise Burke Browne. Because of her father's work the family moved frequently among Irish towns during her childhood. After finishing school she took employment as a secretary in Dublin. In 1927 she joined the Legion of Mary, the lay Catholic apostolic association founded in Dublin by Frank Duff a few years earlier. She proved an energetic organizer and served as president of a praesidium. She hoped to enter the Poor Clare convent in Belfast, but tuberculosis diagnosed in her early twenties made enclosed religious life impossible. She remained a lay member of the Legion and later became a full-time worker for the movement in Ireland.

In 1936, still in fragile health, she volunteered to go as a Legion of Mary envoy to East Africa. Duff accepted the offer, and she sailed for Mombasa. From a base in Nairobi she spent the next eight years founding and visiting Legion groups across Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika (now Tanzania), and farther afield in Mauritius and Nyasaland. Travel was often by bicycle, lorry, or on foot; she slept in rudimentary conditions and worked among both European settlers and African communities. She trained local officers, helped translate Legion handbooks, and established praesidia in districts where the organization had not previously existed. Contemporary letters and reports describe a determined and cheerful character who treated recurring illness as an inconvenience rather than a reason to stop.

Her tuberculosis advanced steadily. She suffered repeated hemorrhages and periods in hospital, yet continued to travel and to correspond with Legionaries. She died in Nairobi on 12 May 1944 at the age of thirty-six and was buried in the missionaries' cemetery in that city. The diocesan process for her beatification was opened in Nairobi; on 15 December 1994 Pope John Paul II declared her Venerable, affirming the heroic character of her virtues. She has not been beatified or canonized. Among members of the Legion of Mary she is remembered as a model of lay missionary perseverance in the face of serious illness.
