Biography

Short Description

Edgardo Levi Mortara was born in 1851 in Bologna, then a city of the Papal States, to Momolo Mortara and Marianna Padovani, a Jewish couple. As an infant he fell seriously ill, and a Catholic domestic servant in the household, Anna Morisi, later stated that she had performed an emergency baptism. Under the civil and canon law then in force in the Papal States, a validly baptized child was regarded as a Catholic and could not be raised by non-Catholic parents. In 1858, when Mortara was six years old, papal police acting on the authority of the Holy Office removed him from his family home and conveyed him to Rome. Pope Pius IX declined repeated petitions for the child’s return, holding the baptism to be valid and the boy’s Catholic education to be a religious obligation.

The seizure became an international scandal, remembered as the Mortara case. Jewish communities in Europe and the United States, liberal publicists, and several governments, including that of Napoleon III, protested the action as an abuse of papal temporal power and a violation of parental rights. Sir Moses Montefiore and other Jewish leaders sought diplomatic intervention. Italian nationalists used the affair to argue that the Papal States were an anachronism incompatible with modern civil liberty. The controversy damaged the prestige of Pius IX’s government in the years immediately preceding the wars of Italian unification. Mortara was placed in the House of Catechumens in Rome, instructed in the Catholic faith, and treated by Pius IX with marked personal favor; the pope became a father figure to the boy, who later took the religious name Pio Maria.

Mortara remained a Catholic after reaching adulthood. In the late 1860s he entered the Canons Regular of the Lateran. He was ordained a priest in the 1870s and thereafter worked as a preacher and missionary, traveling widely in Europe and visiting North America, where he addressed Italian immigrant congregations among others. He attempted, without success, to convert members of his family; his parents remained Jewish. After Italian troops entered Rome in 1870 and papal temporal rule ended there, he continued in religious life rather than returning to his family of origin. He met his parents on later occasions but did not abandon the priesthood or the Church.

In later decades he lived mainly in houses of his order, including in Belgium. He died in Liège in 1940, a few months before the German occupation of the country. He never married and had no children. He has not been beatified or canonized and is not the object of an established liturgical cult or list of patronages. The Mortara case remains a central episode in nineteenth-century religious and political history, frequently cited in discussions of Pius IX, Jewish–Catholic relations, forced baptism, and the collapse of the Papal States.
