Biography

Short Description

Edigna of Puch, known in German as Edigna von Puch, is a figure of Bavarian hagiography whose life is known almost entirely from later legend rather than from contemporary eleventh- or twelfth-century documents. No charter, annal, or necrology of her own time mentions her by name. The story that became standard in the late Middle Ages and early modern period presents her as a princess of France, often identified as a daughter of King Henry I. That royal parentage cannot be confirmed in Capetian genealogy and is treated by historians as a typical legendary elevation of a local holy woman. Tradition nonetheless places her origin in France in the mid-eleventh century and describes a youth at a royal court, followed by flight from an arranged marriage.

According to the legend, she left France with two attendants and a chest of treasure rather than submit to the unwanted marriage. After a long journey she settled at Puch, a village in the Amper valley in the Duchy of Bavaria, in the region of present-day Fürstenfeldbruck west of Munich. There she is said to have made her dwelling in the hollow trunk of a great linden tree and to have lived as a recluse for some thirty-five years. She occupied herself with prayer, fasting, and secret almsgiving; the gold she had brought was later said to have been used for the poor and for the local church. Her hiding place was revealed, in the usual manner of such tales, when a farmer’s oxen knelt before the tree. Once discovered, she remained at Puch as a known holy woman until her death.

Tradition dates her death to 26 February 1109. She was buried in the village church, later dedicated to Saint Sebastian, where a tomb became the centre of a local cult. A linden tree associated with her hermitage—whether the original hollow tree or a successor—has long stood beside the church and remained an object of popular devotion. Her feast is kept on 26 February. She is regarded as patron of Puch and has been invoked especially by farming communities for the protection of cattle against disease. No papal beatification or canonization in the later juridical sense is recorded; her cult is of the older, popular and episcopal type common to many regional holy persons of the Holy Roman Empire. She is commonly styled Blessed Edigna in Bavarian Catholic tradition.

Modern historical writing treats the French-princess motif and many narrative details as legendary accretions of the later Middle Ages and Baroque period, when her vita was written down and her image appeared in Bavarian churches. A genuine recluse at Puch in the decades around 1100 may underlie the cult, but that possibility cannot be demonstrated from surviving sources. Relics and a tomb in the parish church of Saint Sebastian at Puch continue to attract local veneration.
