Biography

Short Description

Edith of Polesworth, also known as Editha or Eadgyth, was an Anglo-Saxon abbess venerated as a saint in the English Midlands, above all at Polesworth in Warwickshire and at Tamworth in Staffordshire. Almost nothing about her can be established from contemporary tenth-century evidence. No charter issued in her name survives, and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle does not mention an abbess of Polesworth. Knowledge of her therefore rests on later medieval legend, on the existence of a shrine and liturgical feast, and on attempts by twelfth- and thirteenth-century writers to identify her with a sister of King Æthelstan. Modern historians treat her historical identity as uncertain and warn that more than one woman named Eadgyth may have been fused in later tradition.

A persistent story, developed in the twelfth century and repeated in later compilations such as the Flores Historiarum, makes Edith a daughter of Edward the Elder and a sister of King Æthelstan, who reigned from 924 to 939. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in 926 Æthelstan gave a sister in marriage to Sihtric Cáech, the Norse-Gael king of Northumbria. Sihtric died in 927. Later hagiography claimed that the widowed princess refused a second marriage, took the veil, and became abbess of a nunnery at Polesworth, sometimes described as a royal foundation. William of Malmesbury discusses Æthelstan's sisters, including those sent to the Continent, but does not provide a clear contemporary identification of the Northumbrian bride with the Polesworth abbess. The marriage story therefore remains a plausible reconstruction rather than a documented fact, and it is not known whether the saint of Polesworth was ever married or was a consecrated virgin from youth.

Polesworth Abbey, a house of nuns on the River Anker near the Warwickshire–Staffordshire border, claimed Edith as foundress or early abbess and kept her relics. The community was later regarded as Benedictine. A parallel cult existed at Tamworth, a former Mercian royal centre a few miles away, where the large medieval parish church of St Editha still bears her name. Some antiquaries and some modern scholars have suggested that Edith of Polesworth and Edith of Tamworth represent a single cult spread across neighbouring houses; others have left open the possibility of two distinct commemorations. In either case, the shrine at Polesworth and the Tamworth dedication are the principal medieval witnesses to her veneration. No reliable account of her death or burial survives beyond the local tradition that she died and was enshrined at Polesworth.

Her feast was kept on 15 July. She must be distinguished from the better-documented St Edith of Wilton, daughter of King Edgar and Wulfthryth, who lived in the later tenth century and whose feast falls in September. Dates of birth and death assigned to Edith of Polesworth in later calendars and popular saint-lists, sometimes placed in the mid-tenth century, have no secure contemporary basis, and figures such as 871 that appear in some modern compilations are chronologically impossible if she was a sister of Æthelstan. She was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; her sanctity belongs to the older English pattern of local monastic cult and episcopal or popular recognition. Within those limits she remains an important figure in the religious landscape of tenth-century Mercia, even though the details of her life cannot be recovered with confidence.
