Biography

Short Description

Eduard Profittlich was born in 1890 in the village of Birresdorf in the Rhineland, then part of the German Empire. He grew up in a rural Catholic family at a time when the Church in Germany still lived with the legal and social after-effects of the Kulturkampf, including long-standing restrictions on the Jesuits. As a young man he entered the Society of Jesus and completed the order’s lengthy formation, which for German Jesuits of that generation commonly involved houses of study in the Netherlands and elsewhere outside the Reich. He was ordained a priest in the early 1920s and spent the remainder of that decade in Jesuit pastoral and educational work in Central Europe before being assigned to the Baltic mission field.

The Catholic community in independent Estonia after the First World War was very small, a few thousand faithful made up largely of Poles, Lithuanians, Germans, and a limited number of Estonian converts, in a country that was otherwise Lutheran and Orthodox. Profittlich arrived there around 1930 and in 1931 was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Estonia, becoming the ordinary for Catholics in the whole country. He learned Estonian, visited scattered congregations, and worked to give the Church a stable local character rather than that of a merely foreign enclave. In the mid-1930s he took Estonian citizenship. In 1936 Pope Pius XI named him titular archbishop of Hadrianopolis in Haemimonto; after episcopal consecration he continued to govern as bishop-administrator, with his principal church in Tallinn.

Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940 brought surveillance, confiscations, and the progressive dismantling of religious institutions. Profittlich remained in Tallinn rather than withdraw to Germany. In the summer of 1941, as war opened between Germany and the Soviet Union, he was arrested by the NKVD, removed from Estonia into the Russian interior, and interrogated. The charges against him—counter-revolutionary activity and service of foreign, specifically Vatican, interests—were those routinely used against Catholic bishops in the occupied Baltic states. A tribunal imposed a death sentence. He died in prison at Kirov in February 1942, of illness and the effects of confinement, before the sentence was carried out. No verified public grave has been identified.

In Catholic and Estonian historical memory Profittlich is the pastor who stayed with a threatened minority Church and who died in the Stalinist prison system. His decade as apostolic administrator is treated as the formative period of the modern Catholic organization in Estonia. The Society of Jesus and the local Church have long regarded him as a martyr of the twentieth-century persecutions; a cause for beatification has been pursued on the ground of martyrdom, and he is commemorated among clergy who perished in Soviet prisons, even where an older universal liturgical feast was not firmly fixed.
