Biography

Short Description

Edward Klinik was a Polish Roman Catholic layman numbered among the 108 Martyrs of World War II. He was born on 21 July 1919 in Poznań, in Greater Poland, in the newly restored Polish state after the First World War. He grew up in a Catholic family of modest means and received much of his religious and social formation at the Salesian oratory of Saint John Bosco in Poznań. Following the educational method of Don Bosco, the oratory offered young workers and students prayer, recreation, and moral instruction. There Klinik formed a close circle with Czesław Jóźwiak, Edward Kaźmierski, Franciszek Kęsy, and Jarogniew Wojciechowski. The five became known for regular sacramental life, mutual loyalty, and attachment to the Church in the last years of the interwar period.

After the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, occupation authorities suppressed Polish educational, cultural, and religious associations. Church-related youth work was treated as a possible source of resistance. In September 1940 the Gestapo arrested Klinik and his four companions and charged them with membership in an illegal organization. They were held in Poznań, including at Fort VII, and were later moved through other prisons in occupied Poland and in Germany, among them Wronki, Berlin, and Zwickau. They underwent interrogation and the severe regime of Nazi prisons. Later testimony and the group’s surviving correspondence describe them as remaining steadfast in faith and in support of one another.

In 1942 a German court condemned them to death. On 24 August 1942 Edward Klinik was executed by guillotine in the prison at Dresden, together with Jóźwiak, Kaźmierski, Kęsy, and Wojciechowski. He was twenty-three years old. Letters written before the execution express acceptance of death, concern for their families, and a spirit of Christian forgiveness. Their deaths belong to the wider persecution of Polish clergy, religious, and committed lay Catholics under the occupation.

On 13 June 1999, in Warsaw, Pope John Paul II beatified Edward Klinik among the 108 Martyrs of World War II, a group of bishops, priests, religious, and laity killed out of hatred of the faith between 1939 and 1945. He is venerated as Blessed Edward Klinik and has not been canonized. The 108 martyrs are commemorated on 12 June in the liturgical calendar of Poland. Devotion to Klinik and his four companions is especially associated with Poznań and with the Salesian family, which regards the five as examples of youthful holiness formed in the oratory and as witnesses to fidelity under totalitarian persecution in twentieth-century Europe.
