Biography

Short Description

Edward, later known as Edward the Martyr, was King of the English from 975 until he was killed in 978. He was the eldest son of King Edgar, whose reign in the tenth century had strengthened English royal authority. The identity of Edward's mother is not recorded with certainty in contemporary evidence; later writers often named her Æthelflæd, and some traditions associated her with a woman of noble but not queenly rank, a point that afterwards fuelled disputes over Edward's standing. He was born in England in the early 960s. When Edgar died in 975, a succession struggle followed. Edward was supported by leading churchmen of the Benedictine reform, including Archbishop Dunstan of Canterbury and Archbishop Oswald of York, together with a number of ealdormen. His rival was his younger half-brother Æthelred, son of Queen Ælfthryth. Edward was accepted as king and consecrated, but his hold on power remained fragile.

The short reign was disturbed by an aristocratic reaction against the monastic endowments of Edgar's later years. Lands that had been granted to reformed Benedictine houses were seized or reclaimed by lay nobles, and the king, still an adolescent, was not able to impose a lasting settlement. Surviving charters and later narrative sources give only a partial picture of government in these years. Edward appears in the witness lists of a modest number of documents, and the political community remained divided between his supporters and those of Ælfthryth and Æthelred.

On 18 March 978 Edward was killed at Corfe in Dorset, where he had gone to visit Ælfthryth and Æthelred. Near-contemporary entries in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle condemn the slaying as a terrible crime but do not identify the killers. Later hagiographical texts, written to promote Edward's sanctity, blamed Ælfthryth and described the king as being stabbed while still mounted, after a cup had been offered to him at the gate. Modern historians regard the detailed accusation against the queen as unproven and note that it may reflect later monastic hostility and the needs of a martyr cult. The murder ended the reign and placed Æthelred on the throne.

Edward's corpse was first buried at Wareham without the honours due to a king. Within about a year it was translated to the nunnery of Shaftesbury Abbey, an event accompanied by reports of miracles. Veneration of Edward as a martyr spread in England in the late tenth and eleventh centuries; his feast was kept on 18 March, the date of his death. Because he died in his teens he is not recorded as having married or as having had children. He is commemorated as a saint in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Anglican churches. The historical Edward remains a poorly documented figure whose reputation was shaped above all by the circumstances of his death and by the religious houses that guarded his relics.
