Biography

Short Description

Egidio Bullesi was born on 24 August 1905 in Pola (present-day Pula, Croatia), then a major naval port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire on the Istrian peninsula. He grew up in an Italian-speaking Catholic family of modest means in a multiethnic city dominated by the imperial navy and shipyards. He received a Christian upbringing and elementary schooling. The collapse of Austria-Hungary in 1918 and the annexation of Istria to the Kingdom of Italy formed the political backdrop of his adolescence.

As a young man he worked at the Pola naval arsenal among shipyard laborers. In an industrial setting often marked by secular ideologies, he became known for integrity, charity, and a quiet Christian witness. He took part in Catholic Action and, drawn to Franciscan poverty and Gospel simplicity, was received into the Third Order of Saint Francis, living as a secular Franciscan while remaining a worker. His piety centered on the Eucharist, frequent reception of the sacraments, devotion to the Virgin Mary, care for the poor, and the Christian formation of youth.

In his early twenties Bullesi contracted tuberculosis. He accepted illness in a spirit of faith and, so far as his strength allowed, continued prayer and concern for others. He died in Pola on 25 April 1929, at the age of twenty-three. Those who knew him already regarded him as a model of lay holiness. A spiritual diary and other notes later helped document an interior life marked by trust in God and Franciscan spirituality.

After his death a reputation for sanctity persisted in Istria and among Franciscans and Catholic Action circles. A cause for beatification was introduced, and he is recognized in the Catholic Church as a Servant of God. He has not been beatified or canonized and has no universally assigned feast day or official patronages. His life is remembered as an example of holiness in ordinary labor and of the Secular Franciscan vocation in early twentieth-century Istria.
