Biography

Short Description

Egilbert, commonly called Egilbert von Moosburg and also spelled Egilbert, was Bishop of Freising from 1005 until his death in 1039. He belonged to the Bavarian comital family of Moosburg, whose lordship was centred on Moosburg an der Isar in the Duchy of Bavaria. Surviving eleventh-century sources do not record the year or place of his birth; later estimates that place it around 970 are inferences from the date of his elevation and should not be treated as documented fact. In 1005 King Henry II, himself a former duke of Bavaria and a determined organizer of the German imperial church, named Egilbert to the vacant see after the death of Bishop Gottschalk. The appointment fitted the Ottonian pattern of elevating high-born clerics who could serve both as diocesan ordinaries and as imperial vassals within the Reichskirche.

During Henry II’s reign Egilbert ranked among the king’s ecclesiastical allies in Bavaria. In 1007 the German episcopate, at the synod of Frankfurt, consented to Henry’s foundation of the new Diocese of Bamberg, a centrepiece of royal church policy richly endowed from crown and Würzburg lands. Freising’s own territorial integrity was not diminished by that foundation, and Egilbert’s years in office coincide with continued Ottonian patronage of the old Bavarian bishoprics. Royal diplomata of the period confirmed or augmented property of the church of Freising. The diocese remained a major landholder, with estates not only in Bavaria but in the Alpine valleys of the Inn and the Puster, including the ancient monastic cell of Innichen (San Candido), which had been given to Freising in the eighth century and long formed part of the see’s missionary and proprietary landscape.

Egilbert’s episcopate lasted through the change of dynasty in 1024. He retained the see under the first Salian king, Conrad II, and into the early years of Henry III, which indicates that he remained acceptable both to the new royal house and to the Bavarian aristocracy. In the political structure of the early eleventh century a bishop of Freising was a secular prince as well as a pastor: he administered the cathedral and its chapter, exercised jurisdiction, managed extensive estates, and was expected to support the king. Traces of his government survive chiefly in charters and in the Freising tradition books that registered gifts of land to the church. No contemporary vita describes his character, preaching, or inner life; like most German bishops of his generation he is visible to historians mainly as a name in royal and episcopal acta rather than as a fully documented individual.

He died on 4 November 1039, a date preserved in the necrological tradition of Freising, after occupying the see for thirty-four years. He was succeeded by Bishop Nitker. There is no reliable evidence that he married or had children, nor that he belonged to a monastic order; he appears in the record as a secular cleric of comital birth raised to the episcopate. He was not canonized, and no feast day or patronage is attached to him in the Roman martyrology or in the later liturgical tradition of Freising, whose principal saints remained Corbinian and other earlier figures. The relative obscurity of his personal biography is typical of many long-reigning imperial bishops of the decades around the year 1000, whose careers must be reconstructed from sparse diplomatic notices, episcopal catalogues, and necrologies rather than from narrative lives.
