Biography

Short Description

Elder Paisios of Mount Athos, born Arsenios Eznepidis, was a Greek Orthodox monk and spiritual elder who became one of the most widely venerated saints of the twentieth-century Orthodox Church. He was born in 1924 in the village of Farasa in Cappadocia, then in the Republic of Turkey, to Prodromos and Eulampia Eznepidis, members of the local Greek Orthodox community. Shortly after his birth the family was displaced in the compulsory population exchange between Greece and Turkey and resettled in Konitsa in Epirus, Greece. According to the traditional account he was baptized by the Cappadocian priest Arsenios, later glorified as Saint Arsenios of Cappadocia, who gave the child his own name. Raised in a devout household, he showed an early inclination toward prayer and monastic life and worked as a carpenter in his youth.

After serving in the Greek Army during the Greek Civil War of the late 1940s, principally as a radio operator, he entered the monastic republic of Mount Athos around 1950. He received the monastic name Paisios and lived at several Athonite houses, including the Monasteries of Esphigmenou and Philotheou. In the early 1960s he spent a period at the Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai. He later returned to Athos and lived in various cells and sketes; from 1979 he resided at the hermitage of Panagouda, belonging to the Monastery of Koutloumousiou, where he received large numbers of pilgrims seeking spiritual counsel. He was known for an austere ascetic life, for the gifts of discernment and consolation attributed to him by visitors, and for straightforward advice on prayer, family life, and the spiritual struggle.

Paisios composed or dictated a number of spiritual writings that circulated first among disciples and later in print, including collections of letters and talks and accounts of earlier Athonite fathers. These works have been translated into many languages and remain widely read in Orthodox communities. Throughout his later years he suffered from serious illness, including respiratory disease and cancer. He maintained a close spiritual relationship with the women’s monastery of Saint John the Theologian at Souroti, near Thessaloniki, and spent his final period of medical treatment there.

He died at Souroti on 12 July 1994 and was buried in the monastery cemetery. The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople glorified him as a saint in January 2015, during the patriarchate of Bartholomew I; his principal feast is kept on 12 July. He is venerated throughout the Orthodox world, especially in Greece and Cyprus and among Slavic Orthodox churches that have also inscribed him in their calendars. Numerous miracles have been attributed to his intercession both in life and after death, and his tomb at Souroti remains a major pilgrimage site.
