Biography

Short Description

Eleanor of Castile was a Castilian infanta and, for a time, queen consort of Aragon. She was a daughter of King Alfonso VIII of Castile and Queen Eleanor of England, herself a daughter of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Through that parentage she stood at the intersection of the Castilian royal house and the Plantagenet dynasty. Her siblings included Berengaria, who became queen of León and later of Castile; Urraca, queen of Portugal; Blanche, queen of France and mother of Louis IX; and Henry I of Castile. Eleanor was born in the early thirteenth century, customarily dated to 1202, and grew up at a court shaped by her father’s wars against the Almohads, including the victory of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, and by her parents’ foundation and patronage of the Cistercian monastery of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas at Burgos.

In 1221 she was married to James I of Aragon, later called James the Conqueror, in a diplomatic alliance between Castile and the Crown of Aragon. The marriage was celebrated at Ágreda. James was still an adolescent king whose early reign had been dominated by factions and by the Templar guardianship of his childhood; Eleanor was the older partner. The couple had one son, Alfonso of Aragon, born in 1229. Alfonso was James’s eldest son and for a period occupied an important place in the succession of Aragon, though the later children of James’s second marriage would define the main dynastic line. The marriage itself proved short-lived as a political and personal union.

The union was dissolved on canonical grounds of consanguinity. Eleanor and James both descended from Alfonso VII of León, and they therefore fell within the prohibited degrees of kinship. In 1229 Pope Gregory IX declared the marriage null. James I thereafter married Yolanda of Hungary, whose children included Peter III of Aragon. Eleanor’s son Alfonso continued to be treated as a royal prince of Aragon and was associated with claims to the Aragonese inheritance; he died in 1260, during his father’s lifetime, without establishing a lasting independent line.

After the annulment Eleanor returned to Castile and withdrew to the monastery of Las Huelgas in Burgos, the Cistercian abbey founded by her parents as a royal necropolis and a house of nuns of high rank. She lived there in a religious setting for the rest of her life and is generally described as having entered the Cistercian community. She died in 1244 and was buried at Las Huelgas. She was not canonized or beatified, and she has no established feast day or roster of patronages in the Catholic Church. Her historical importance rests on her place in the Castilian royal family, her brief queenship in Aragon, her motherhood of Alfonso of Aragon, and her association with one of the principal royal monasteries of medieval Castile.
