Biography

Elena Guerra was born on 23 June 1835 in Lucca, then the capital of the Duchy of Lucca in central Italy, to a well-to-do family. She received a Christian education and from an early age showed a marked inclination toward prayer and charity. In adolescence she was afflicted by a serious and prolonged illness that kept her largely housebound for several years. During that period she devoted herself to reading Scripture, the Church Fathers, and spiritual writers, and she formed a deep and lasting devotion to the Holy Spirit.

Once her health improved, Guerra began an apostolate among the young women of Lucca. She taught catechism, assisted working-class girls, and established a pious association under the patronage of Saint Zita, the medieval servant who is Lucca's patron saint. In 1882 this initiative took the form of a religious congregation, the Oblates of the Holy Spirit, also known as the Sisters of Saint Zita. The sisters dedicated themselves to the Christian education of girls and to fostering devotion to the Holy Spirit. Guerra was the foundress and first superior, though she later endured internal tensions that led to a temporary removal from leadership before she was reinstated.

Guerra is especially remembered for her efforts to renew devotion to the Holy Spirit throughout the Catholic Church. Over many years she wrote to Pope Leo XIII, urging him to call the faithful to a more intense life in the Spirit and to dedicate the approaching twentieth century to the Holy Spirit. Her persistence is widely credited with influencing Leo XIII's encyclical Divinum illud munus of 1897 on the Holy Spirit, as well as earlier papal invitations to Pentecost novenas. Because of this work she has been called the Apostle of the Holy Spirit. She also composed spiritual writings and letters of formation for her sisters and for the laity.

Elena Guerra died in Lucca on 11 April 1914. The cause for her beatification proceeded in the twentieth century, and Pope John XXIII beatified her on 26 April 1959. The Church keeps her memorial on 11 April. She has not been canonized. Her life remains associated with the education of young women, the founding of a teaching congregation, and the modern revival of devotion to the Holy Spirit.
