Biography

Short Description

Elena Petrović-Njegoš, known in Italian as Elena di Montenegro, was born in 1873 in Cetinje, capital of the Principality of Montenegro, the daughter of Prince Nicholas I (later King Nicholas I) and Milena Vukotić. She belonged to the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty, which in the later nineteenth century sought international standing through education of its children abroad and through marriages into other European houses. Elena received instruction in Cetinje and was sent to the Smolny Institute in Saint Petersburg, then a leading school for noblewomen in the Russian Empire. Raised in the Eastern Orthodox Church, she was noted for a reserved temperament, an interest in literature and botany, and fluency in several languages.

In October 1896 she married Victor Emmanuel, Prince of Naples, heir to King Umberto I of Italy. The marriage was a diplomatic event linking the House of Savoy with Montenegro. Elena converted to Roman Catholicism before the wedding, as required for a consort of the Italian king. After the assassination of Umberto I in 1900, Victor Emmanuel III ascended the throne and Elena became Queen of Italy. She made charity, public health, and disaster relief central to her public role. She was especially associated with relief after the 1908 earthquake that devastated Messina and Reggio Calabria, with support for the Italian Red Cross, and with hospital visiting. During the First World War she took part in organizing military hospitals and nursing services, which strengthened her popularity in Italy.

Elena and Victor Emmanuel III had five children: Princess Yolanda, Princess Mafalda, Prince Umberto (who reigned briefly as Umberto II in 1946), Princess Giovanna (who married Boris III of Bulgaria), and Princess Maria Francesca. The later decades of her queenship coincided with the Fascist dictatorship of Benito Mussolini, whom the king had appointed in 1922, and with Italy’s wars in Ethiopia and Albania, during which Elena held the additional titles of Empress of Ethiopia and Queen of Albania in the official style of the regime. The Second World War brought personal tragedy: her daughter Mafalda, married into the Hessian dynasty, was arrested by the Germans and died at Buchenwald in 1944. After Italy’s defeat and the institutional referendum of 1946, which abolished the monarchy, Elena left Italy with her husband.

The former king and queen lived in exile in Egypt, where Victor Emmanuel III died in Alexandria in 1947. Elena later settled in France. She died in Montpellier in 1952 and was buried in that city. In 2017 her remains were transferred to the Sanctuary of Vicoforte in Piedmont and reinterred beside those of her husband. Elena of Montenegro was not beatified or canonized; historical writing treats her as a queen consort remembered for charitable activity, for the dynastic marriages of her children, and for her place in the last phase of the Italian monarchy.
