Biography

Short Description

Pope Eleutherius, also known as Eleuterus or Eleutherus (Greek: Eleutherios, meaning free), was Bishop of Rome in the later second century. The Liber Pontificalis, a later compilation of papal lives, identifies him as a Greek from Nicopolis in Epirus and names his father Habundius. No contemporary source records the year of his birth, and historians treat the early papal biographies with caution because they mix tradition, reconstruction, and legend. He succeeded Pope Soter and was succeeded by Pope Victor I. Conventional lists, including the Annuario Pontificio, date his episcopate from about 175 to 189, though reconstructions of second-century chronology have proposed slightly earlier or later dates. In a still-pagan imperial capital the Roman church remained a relatively modest network of house communities, and the bishop’s role was pastoral and local rather than the later medieval papacy.

Documentary evidence for his years in office is sparse. Eusebius of Caesarea, writing in the fourth century, places Eleutherius in the Roman succession and notes that Irenaeus of Lyons was in Rome during this pontificate. Irenaeus, already a leading opponent of Gnostic systems, is associated with efforts to keep the churches of Asia Minor and Rome in communion despite disagreement over the date of Easter, the Quartodeciman question. Eleutherius’s tenure also overlapped with the rise of Montanism, a prophetic movement that began in Phrygia and claimed new revelations of the Spirit. Later writers suggested that the Roman church under Eleutherius hesitated before taking a hard line against Montanist prophecy, but the precise sequence of decisions is not securely documented. Intermittent local hostility, rather than a continuous empire-wide persecution, formed the background of Christian life in Rome in these decades.

A famous story, preserved in the Liber Pontificalis and transmitted to medieval England by Bede, asserts that a British king named Lucius wrote to Eleutherius asking to be made a Christian. Historians regard this correspondence as legendary. No second-century evidence supports the existence of a Christian monarch in Britain, and the tale is generally explained as a later confusion or pious invention, perhaps of the sixth or seventh century. Another tradition credited Eleutherius with a disciplinary ruling that Christians should not reject any food fit for human use, a stance consistent with New Testament warnings against extreme dietary asceticism and possibly aimed at Encratite or Gnostic groups. Whether that ruling is authentic to his time or a later ascription remains open to debate. These stories, even when unhistorical, show how later ages imagined a second-century pope as a teacher of orthodoxy and a correspondent of distant peoples.

Eleutherius died in Rome, according to the usual chronology in 189. The Liber Pontificalis states that he was buried on the Vatican Hill near the body of the Apostle Peter. Subsequent centuries claimed the discovery of his grave and the translation of relics to churches such as Santa Susanna, but identifications of second-century papal burials are often uncertain. He has been venerated as a saint from an early period; his feast is kept on 26 May in the Roman Martyrology. Like other popes of the pre-Constantinian era, he was honored by liturgical cult rather than by a formal process of canonization of the kind that developed in the Middle Ages. Little can be said with certainty about his personal life, education, or inner circle. What survives is the outline of a Greek-born bishop who led the Roman church through a generation of doctrinal controversy and who was remembered, however imperfectly, as a link in the apostolic succession of the city.
