Biography

Short Description

Eleutherius of Tournai, known in French as Éleuthère and in Latin as Eleutherius Tornacensis, was a bishop of Tournai in the late fifth and early sixth centuries and is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. Later medieval hagiography presents him as a native of Tournai, born to Christian parents named Medardus and Blandina. No contemporary record preserves a verified year of birth. In his lifetime Tournai (Turnacum) belonged to the former Roman province of Belgica Secunda and stood at the meeting point of Gallo-Roman society and the rising Frankish power of Childeric I and Clovis I. Christianity in the region was already old—local tradition associated the first preaching there with Saint Piatus in the third century—but it had been disrupted by invasions, and Arian as well as pagan beliefs remained influential.

The narrative of his career depends chiefly on vitae composed centuries after his death, especially Carolingian and later recensions of the Vita Sancti Eleutherii, rather than on sixth-century documents. Tradition makes him a friend of Saint Medard of Noyon and states that he was chosen to occupy the episcopal see of Tournai, thereby restoring organized Catholic life in the city. As bishop he is described as a defender of Nicene orthodoxy who preached against Arianism among Franks and Gallo-Romans. The baptism of Clovis and the Frankish turn toward Catholic Christianity form the wider setting of this episcopate, although independent sources do not fix Eleutherius’s dates of office with precision.

Hagiographical accounts relate that his opposition to Arian teaching provoked a violent attack in which he was beaten by heretics and afterwards died of his wounds, and for this reason he has been honored as a martyr. Traditional dates place his death at Tournai on 20 February in 531 or 532. Modern historians treat the martyrdom story and many other biographical details as legendary accretions; they are more cautious about claiming more than that a bishop Eleutherius was remembered as head of the church of Tournai in this period and that his cult is ancient in the diocese.

Devotion to Eleutherius has been centered on Tournai from an early date. His relics have long been preserved in the city, and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Tournai houses a celebrated medieval reliquary associated with him. The principal feast is 20 February, the date given for his death; some local calendars have also marked 25 August in connection with a translation of relics. He is invoked as a patron saint of Tournai. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him as bishop of Tournai who is said to have suffered martyrdom. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; his sainthood belongs to the pre-congregation period of local veneration later ratified by inclusion in the martyrologies.
