Biography

Short Description

Teodora Fracasso, known in religion as Elia di San Clemente, was born on 17 January 1901 in Bari, in the Apulia region of southern Italy. She was the third of nine children of Giuseppe Fracasso and Pasqua Cianci and grew up in a working family of sincere Catholic faith. Baptized soon after birth, she was formed in the parish life of Bari and educated by the Sisters of the Stigmata. From an early age she was noted for piety, a particular love of the Eucharist, and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In childhood she made a private vow of chastity and began to speak of a desire for consecrated life. Family circumstances and her youth prevented an immediate response to that call, and she spent her adolescence helping at home while deepening her prayer.

In 1920, at the age of nineteen, she entered the Discalced Carmelite monastery of Saint Joseph in Bari. She received the religious name Elia di San Clemente, invoking the prophet Elijah, regarded as the spiritual father of Carmel, together with Saint Clement. She was clothed in the habit on 24 November 1920 and made her first profession of vows on 4 December 1921. She made her solemn profession on 11 February 1925. Within the enclosure she lived the Carmelite Rule in its ordinary duties of prayer, work, and community life. She was assigned at times to the sacristy and was remembered by her sisters as humble, obedient, and inwardly joyful. A modest body of writings, including letters, brief poems, and spiritual notes, survives, in which she speaks of union with Christ, the value of hidden sacrifice, and confidence in the will of God.

Her health was never strong. In December 1927 an infection originating in a tooth led to a rapidly worsening condition, described in the accounts of the time as encephalitis or a related inflammation. She died in the monastery on 25 December 1927, Christmas Day, aged twenty-six, and was buried at the Carmel in Bari.

The cause of beatification was undertaken by the Archdiocese of Bari. Pope John Paul II declared her Venerable on 11 December 1987 after the recognition of her heroic virtues. A miracle attributed to her intercession was subsequently approved, and she was beatified on 18 March 2006 in Bari. The rite was celebrated by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, acting in the name of Pope Benedict XVI. She remains a Blessed of the Roman Catholic Church and is honored especially within the Discalced Carmelite Order.
