Biography

Elías Carbonell Mollá was a Spanish Catholic diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Valencia, born in 1869 in Alcoy (also known as Alcoi), an industrial town in the province of Alicante in the Valencian region. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1892 and spent his ministry in parish work rather than in a religious order, a university post, or the episcopate. After serving in various assignments of the archdiocese, he was appointed parish priest of Benilloba, a rural community in the interior of Alicante, and held that charge in the years immediately before the Spanish Civil War.

The military revolt of July 1936 and the ensuing civil war were accompanied, in much of the Republican rearguard, by a violent anticlerical campaign. In Valencia and Alicante, churches were closed or sacked and diocesan clergy were hunted by militias and local committees. Carbonell Mollá left his parish and took shelter with relatives. He was arrested toward the end of September 1936 and was shot on 28 September 1936 in the district of Benilloba.

His death was later examined by the Catholic Church as part of a collective cause for martyrs of the Archdiocese of Valencia. On 11 March 2001, in Saint Peter's Square, Pope John Paul II beatified 233 martyrs of that archdiocese, presented as Blessed José Aparicio Sanz and 232 companions. Elías Carbonell Mollá was included among those companions. The beatification recognized their killing as martyrdom in odium fidei. He has not been canonized. The group is commemorated together, commonly on 22 September; no distinct list of patronages is attached to his name in standard martyrological sources.

Because he was a parish priest of limited public profile, independent biographical literature on Carbonell Mollá is scarce. What can be verified comes chiefly from the documentation of the Valencia martyrdom cause, from diocesan and parish records, and from local memory in Alcoy and Benilloba. He is not recorded as having married or as belonging to a religious congregation. His historical significance lies in his place among the secular clergy of eastern Spain who were killed in the persecution of 1936, and devotion to him remains primarily regional and liturgical.
