Biography

Short Description

Saint Eligius, known in French as Éloi (also Eloy or Loye), was born in 588 at Chaptelat, a village in the territory of Limoges in Aquitaine. His parents, Eucherius and Terrigia, were Christians of Gallo-Roman origin and raised him in the faith. From an early age he showed a marked talent for working precious metals and was apprenticed to Abbo, master of the mint at Limoges, where he learned goldsmithing, die-cutting, and the striking of coinage. His skill and a reputation for personal honesty brought him north to the Merovingian royal court at Paris during the reign of King Chlothar II.

At court he was commissioned to fashion a ceremonial throne richly ornamented with gold and gems. The Vita Eligii, composed by his friend Saint Ouen (Audoin), bishop of Rouen, relates that the gold issued for a single throne proved sufficient, through Eligius’s craftsmanship and his refusal to embezzle material, for two thrones, and that he restored the unused gold to the king. The episode established his standing. He became master of the mint in Paris and, under King Dagobert I, a principal counsellor and keeper of the treasury. While still a layman he lived with notable austerity, used his income to ransom captives and slaves (including Saxons and others brought into Gaul), and distributed alms on a large scale. Around 632 he founded and endowed the monastery of Solignac near Limoges, placing it under Columbanian observance (later mixed with Benedictine practice). In Paris he established a women’s community, often identified with a house dedicated to Saint Martial and later associated with his own name.

After the death of Bishop Acarius, Eligius was chosen for the combined see of Noyon and Tournai. He was ordained priest and consecrated bishop in 641. As bishop he worked to convert remaining pagan populations in Flanders, along the Scheldt, and in neighboring districts, preaching, overthrowing idols, and founding churches and monastic houses. He continued to ransom prisoners and to relieve the poor, and he belonged to the network of leading Frankish churchmen of the mid-seventh century, remaining closely associated with Saint Ouen, who later wrote his life. His combination of court service, artistic and charitable patronage, and missionary episcopate made him one of the most prominent churchmen of his generation in northern Gaul.

Eligius died at Noyon on 1 December 660 and was buried in a church he had caused to be built in that city; the cathedral of Noyon became the principal focus of his tomb and relics, which were later translated and in part dispersed. Veneration began in the generation after his death. His feast is kept on 1 December. Because the cult arose by popular and episcopal acclamation in the early Middle Ages, he was never the subject of a later papal process of beatification or canonization. He is widely invoked as patron of goldsmiths, blacksmiths, metalworkers, farriers, and others whose trades involve metal, horses, or coinage, and he remains closely associated with Noyon, Tournai, and the regions he evangelized.
