Biography

Short Description

Elisa Giambelluca was a Sicilian Catholic laywoman and secondary-school teacher whose reputation for holiness led the Catholic Church to open a cause for beatification, so that she is known as a Servant of God. She was born in 1941 in Caltanissetta, in the interior of Sicily, and she died in 1986 in Palermo. She belonged to the generation that came of age in Italy after the Second World War, received a university education in mathematics, and worked as a teacher of mathematics and related subjects in Sicilian secondary schools. In a period when the Church was encouraging the apostolate of the laity, she remained a layperson rather than entering a religious congregation, and those who have written about her present her as an example of Christian life lived in the classroom, in the parish, and in hidden prayer.

Her professional activity took place in the schools of Sicily, including Caltanissetta and Palermo. Recollections gathered in connection with her cause portray a teacher who combined intellectual seriousness with attention to her students as persons. She is described as having lived a demanding interior life centered on the sacraments and on fidelity to the Gospel in ordinary duties. She did not contract marriage and is not recorded as having had children; her state of life is that of an unmarried laywoman. She was not a member of a religious order.

In the last period of her life she endured a serious illness and died in Palermo in 1986 at the age of forty-five. Local memory of her virtue persisted after her death. The competent ecclesiastical authority subsequently opened a diocesan inquiry into her life, virtues, and reputation for holiness. She has not been beatified or canonized, and consequently she has no place on the general liturgical calendar and no officially assigned patronages.

Because Giambelluca is a recent and still relatively obscure figure, known chiefly in Sicilian Catholic circles and among those who follow contemporary causes of canonization, many biographical particulars remain poorly attested in independent historical literature. The outline that can be verified is her identity as a mid-twentieth-century Sicilian teacher, her lay and unmarried state, her death in 1986, and the existence of an ecclesiastical inquiry into her reputation for holiness. Fuller documentation, including any spiritual writings or a complete chronology of her teaching posts, belongs to the materials that normally accompany a more advanced stage of a beatification process.
