Biography

Short Description

Elisabeth Chŏng Chŏng-hye was born in 1797 in Seoul, capital of the Joseon kingdom on the Korean peninsula. She belonged to one of the most prominent Catholic families of early Korean Christianity. Her father, Augustine Chŏng Yak-jong, was a scholar-convert, catechist, and writer who was executed in 1801 during the Sinyu persecution, when Elisabeth was still a small child. Her mother, Cecilia Yu So-sa, raised the children in the Catholic faith under conditions of secrecy and danger. Her brother, Paul Chŏng Ha-sang, became a leading lay apostle of the Korean Church in the early nineteenth century. The Chŏng household thus stood at the center of a persecuted community that had taken root in Korea from the late eighteenth century, largely without resident priests and in defiance of a state ban on Christianity.

After her father's martyrdom, Elisabeth grew up amid recurring waves of anti-Catholic persecution. She never married and devoted herself to prayer, charity, and service to the underground Church. She assisted her brother Paul in his efforts to obtain missionary priests for Korea, work that involved clandestine correspondence and petitions directed toward Beijing and Rome. In a Church that remained almost entirely lay-led until French missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society began to arrive in the 1830s, women such as Elisabeth served as catechists, baptizers, and sustainers of hidden communities. She was known among Korean Catholics for instructing others in the faith and for her steadfast piety.

In 1839 the Joseon government launched the Gihae persecution, one of the most severe suppressions of Catholicism in Korean history. Elisabeth was arrested in Seoul together with her mother and other relatives and fellow believers. Imprisoned and subjected to repeated interrogations and torture, she refused to deny her Christian faith or to betray other Catholics. On 20 September 1839 she was taken to the execution ground at Seosomun, the Small West Gate of Seoul, and beheaded. She was forty-two years old. Other members of her family, including her brother Paul Chŏng Ha-sang and her mother Cecilia Yu So-sa, were also put to death in the same persecution.

Elisabeth Chŏng Chŏng-hye was among the Korean martyrs beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 6 May 1984 in a ceremony held in Seoul, together with 102 other Korean martyrs of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including Saints Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn and Paul Chŏng Ha-sang. The group is commemorated on 20 September. Their canonization on Korean soil marked a major recognition of a Church built in large part by laypeople who persevered through repeated state persecutions.
