Biography

Short Description

Elisabetta Canori Mora was born in Rome on 21 November 1774, the daughter of Tommaso Canori and Teresa Primoli. She grew up in a Catholic household in the Papal States during the closing decades of the ancien régime, a world that would soon be shaken by the French Revolution, the Roman Republic of 1798–1799, and the Napoleonic occupation. Several of her siblings died in childhood. In her youth she received a Christian education and was noted for piety. On 10 January 1796 she married the lawyer Cristoforo Mora. The marriage was contracted with the Church’s blessing and produced four daughters, two of whom died while still young.

The early promise of the marriage gave way to prolonged trial. Cristoforo Mora fell into infidelity and a disorderly life, dissipated the family’s means, and in time abandoned Elisabetta and the surviving children, living apart from them with another woman. She was left to support her daughters and, for a period, her own parents, earning a living by needlework and similar labor. Contemporary accounts present her as refusing public scandal or hatred: she continued to regard the marriage bond as indissoluble, interpreted her abandonment as a share in the Cross, and prayed constantly for her husband’s conversion. In that sense her domestic suffering became the center of her spiritual life rather than a reason to leave the married state.

In 1807 she was received into the Third Order of the Most Holy Trinity, remaining a lay tertiary with household duties rather than entering a cloister. The Trinitarian family, founded in the twelfth century for devotion to the Trinity and for the ransom of captives, gave her a rule, a spiritual framework, and a habit worn in a manner suited to a secular tertiary. She became known in Rome for an intense interior life. Those around her attributed to her mystical graces, including visions and interior locutions, some of which concerned the purification of the Church and the failings of clergy and faithful in an age of political persecution and religious indifference. She combined this hidden life with charity toward the poor and with the religious formation of her daughters.

Elisabetta died in Rome on 5 February 1825 after a decline in health. After her death Cristoforo Mora underwent a conversion, entered the Franciscan Order, and was ordained a priest; he later gave testimony in the cause for her beatification. A cult of memory formed especially among Trinitarians and among the faithful who saw in her a model of marital fidelity under extreme strain. Following diocesan inquiries and the recognition of a miracle attributed to her intercession, Pope John Paul II beatified her on 24 April 1994 in Saint Peter’s Square, presenting her as an example of lay holiness lived inside marriage and family, and of perseverance in hope for a spouse’s conversion. Her remains are kept in the Trinitarian church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane in Rome. She has not been canonized.
