Biography

Short Description

Elisabetta Sanna was born on 23 April 1788 in Codrongianos, a farming town in northern Sardinia, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. She was raised in a devout Catholic household of modest means. In infancy she contracted smallpox, which left her with impaired vision in one eye and other lasting effects on her health. She received little formal schooling, but she was formed in prayer and in the practical duties of rural family life. In 1807 she married Antonio Maria Porcu. The couple had seven children, two of whom died in early childhood. Sanna devoted herself to the care of her household and to the Christian upbringing of her surviving children, while sharing in the labor of a farming family and practicing charity toward neighbors in need.

In 1825 her husband died, leaving her a widow with children still at home. Around the same period she suffered a serious physical injury that produced a permanent ankylosis of the shoulders, so that she could no longer raise her arms. The disability was painful and lifelong: she could not make the sign of the cross without help and was severely limited in every manual task. She continued to care for her family as far as her condition allowed and placed herself under regular spiritual direction. In her district she became known as a devout widow who accepted suffering without bitterness.

In 1831 she traveled from Sardinia to Rome, hoping for healing at the tomb of Saint Peter and contemplating further pilgrimage. She was not cured, and her frailty made a return sea voyage impracticable, so she remained in Rome for the rest of her life—some twenty-six years—living in poverty in modest lodgings near the Vatican. There she met Vincent Pallotti, founder of the Union of Catholic Apostolate, and became one of his spiritual daughters and collaborators. She was received into the Third Order of Saint Francis and took part in the Union’s apostolate according to her limited physical means. Unable to undertake strenuous external works, she exercised a hidden ministry of prayer, counsel, and hospitality: priests, religious, and lay people sought her out in her small room. She was noted for Eucharistic devotion, meditation on the Passion, and patience under constant pain.

Sanna died in Rome on 17 February 1857. She was first buried in the Campo Verano cemetery; her remains were later transferred to the church of San Salvatore in Onda, the Roman church associated with Pallotti and his foundation. A reputation for holiness endured among the Pallottines and in her native Sardinia. Pope Francis recognized her heroic virtues, and she was beatified on 17 September 2016 at a ceremony held in Sardinia near her birthplace. The Church commemorates her on 17 February. She is remembered as a laywoman, wife, mother, and widow whose Christian life unfolded in poverty, disability, and long exile from her island, within the Franciscan third-order tradition and the Pallottine family.
