Biography

Short Description

Elizabeth of Aragon, known in Portuguese as Rainha Santa Isabel and in English as Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, was born in 1271 at Zaragoza in the Kingdom of Aragon. She was the daughter of King Peter III of Aragon, called the Great, and of Constance of Sicily, daughter of Manfred of Hohenstaufen. She received the name Isabel in honor of her great-aunt, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, whose example of royal charity was held up to her from childhood. Raised at a court that was both politically ambitious and sincerely religious, she was educated in the Scriptures and in the practices of devotion then current in the Crown of Aragon. Chroniclers later emphasized her early gravity, her fasting, and her concern for the poor, traits that would mark her entire public life.

A marriage alliance with Portugal was concluded while she was still young. She was wed to King Denis of Portugal, a monarch remembered as a poet, a promoter of agriculture, and the founder of the University of Coimbra, yet also as a man of strong passions and numerous infidelities. The marriage was arranged in the early 1280s and she assumed the role of queen consort while still in her teens. At the Portuguese court she combined the duties of a royal wife with a personal rule of life that included daily Mass, the Divine Office, and extensive almsgiving. She founded hospitals, hostels for pilgrims and the poor, homes for foundlings, and houses for repentant women. The best-known story attached to her charity is the Miracle of the Roses: surprised by her husband while carrying bread in her cloak for the needy on a winter day, she opened the garment and the bread appeared as roses. The episode, whether taken as history or as pious legend modeled on the similar tale of Elizabeth of Hungary, became the emblem of her reputation. The royal couple had two children who reached adulthood: Constance, who married King Ferdinand IV of Castile, and Afonso, who succeeded his father as Afonso IV of Portugal. Denis’s illegitimate children and the factions that gathered around them produced bitter conflict, culminating in open rebellion by Prince Afonso against the king.

Elizabeth’s most celebrated public role was that of peacemaker. In 1323, when the armies of father and son faced one another near Lisbon, she rode between the lines and by her presence and entreaties averted bloodshed. After King Denis died in 1325 she made a pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint James at Compostela, distributed a large part of her remaining wealth, and retired to Coimbra. There she had already founded a monastery of Poor Clare nuns at Santa Clara-a-Velha. She took the habit of the Third Order of Saint Francis and lived in close association with the community, though she did not enter the cloister under solemn vows, preferring to remain free for works of mercy and for occasional political mediation. She continued to intervene in disputes among the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula.

In the summer of 1336 war threatened once more, this time between her son Afonso IV of Portugal and Alfonso XI of Castile. Despite age and illness she set out for Estremoz, near the frontier, in order to negotiate peace. She succeeded in opening talks but died at Estremoz Castle on 4 July 1336 before the settlement was fully secured. Her body was conveyed to Coimbra and buried at the monastery she had founded; when the old house suffered from flooding, her remains were later translated to the new Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova, where her tomb remains a place of pilgrimage. An incorrupt body and numerous favors attributed to her intercession sustained a popular cult. Pope Leo X authorized her public veneration in the early sixteenth century, and Pope Urban VIII canonized her in 1625. Her feast is observed on 4 July. She is invoked as a patron of Portugal, of the city of Coimbra, of the Franciscan Third Order, of peace, of queens, of widows, of brides, of charitable works, and of those afflicted by jealousy, adultery, or strife within marriage.
