Biography

Short Description

Elizabeth of Hungary was a princess of the Árpád dynasty, born in the Kingdom of Hungary around the middle of the thirteenth century. She was a daughter of King Stephen V of Hungary and of Elizabeth the Cuman, whose marriage into the Hungarian royal house reflected Béla IV’s policy of settling and integrating Cuman (Kipchak) groups after the Mongol invasion of 1241–1242. Through her father she was a granddaughter of Béla IV and a great-niece of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (Elizabeth of Thuringia), with whom she is sometimes confused in later writing. Her siblings included King Ladislaus IV of Hungary, Mary of Hungary who became queen of Naples by marriage to Charles II of Anjou, and Catherine of Hungary who married Stefan Dragutin of Serbia. The family thus stood at the centre of a network of Central European and Balkan royal alliances in the later thirteenth century.

The Hungary of Elizabeth’s youth was politically unstable. Stephen V reigned only briefly after long tension with his father Béla IV, and Ladislaus IV, who succeeded as a child, faced baronial leagues, Cuman unrest, and papal pressure. Dynastic marriages of the king’s sisters were an important instrument of foreign policy. Elizabeth herself appears at some point to have been destined for the cloister. Later accounts, including Byzantine historical writing, state that she had taken monastic vows before any marriage to the Serbian king. Several Árpád women of the thirteenth century entered Dominican houses, notably on Margaret Island in the Danube, but the particular community, if any, to which Elizabeth belonged is not named in surviving sources in a way that can be verified with certainty.

In 1282 Stefan Uroš II Milutin became king of Serbia after his elder brother Stefan Dragutin was sidelined following an injury. Around 1283 a marriage was arranged between Milutin and Elizabeth, intended to bind the Nemanjić and Árpád courts more closely while Serbia was expanding and Hungary wished to secure its southern approaches. Elizabeth thereby became queen consort of Serbia. The union was canonically fraught. She was reported already to have been a professed nun; she was also the sister of Dragutin’s wife Catherine, so that two sisters would have been married to two brothers; and further degrees of kinship between the houses were cited. Serbian churchmen, the Patriarchate of Constantinople, and the papacy all found grounds for objection. The Byzantine historian George Pachymeres is among the sources that comment on the irregularity of the marriage.

The marriage lasted only a short time, probably not more than about a year, and was set aside. Milutin soon married Anna Terter, daughter of the Bulgarian ruler George I Terter, reorienting Serbian diplomacy toward Bulgaria. Elizabeth disappears from the Serbian royal record and is thought to have returned to Hungary, but contemporary Hungarian narrative sources say little about her later years. No children of the marriage to Milutin are securely documented. Traditional chronology places her death around 1322, though the evidence is thin and some references have been taken to imply that she was still living in the 1310s. Neither the place of her death nor her place of burial is known from a reliable source.

Because the documentary trail is sparse, Elizabeth’s biography remains incomplete and in places contested. She did not become a widely venerated saint, unlike her great-aunt Elizabeth of Thuringia, and she is not associated with a stable feast day, a list of patronages, or a formal canonization or beatification in the major calendars of the Catholic or Orthodox churches. Her historical importance lies in the light she throws on Árpád–Nemanjić relations, on the limits of dynastic marriage when it collided with canon law, and on the poorly recorded lives of royal women who left the cloister or returned to it in the later thirteenth century. Modern accounts therefore rely on a combination of Hungarian genealogical tradition, Serbian and Byzantine chronicles, and cautious inference, and they necessarily leave many details of her life unknown.
