Biography

Short Description

Elizabeth Qin Bian (also recorded as Elisabeth Qin Bian or Qin Bian Elisabeth; Chinese: 秦卞氏) was a Chinese Catholic laywoman of the late Qing period who was martyred during the Boxer Rebellion. She was born in 1846 in northern China, in the area that corresponds to present-day Hebei. Surviving sources say little about her childhood or the circumstances of her conversion or upbringing in the faith, but they agree that she married, had children, and was later widowed. She continued to raise her family as Catholics. Among her children was Simon Qin Chunfu (Qin Chunfu), born in 1886, who was himself later recognized as a martyr and saint. In a society in which Chinese Christians often faced legal disabilities, local hostility, and accusations of disloyalty, her household remained attached to the Church.

In 1900 the Yihetuan movement, known in the West as the Boxers, launched a violent campaign against foreigners and Chinese Christians across northern China, especially in Zhili (Hebei) and Shanxi. Converts were ordered to recant; churches and Catholic villages were attacked. Elizabeth, then about fifty-four, refused to apostatize. On 19 July 1900 she was put to death for her faith, together with her son Simon, then about fourteen, and other local Catholics. The precise village and the exact manner of execution are not recorded with uniform certainty in the public hagiographical summaries, though her death was judged to have been in odium fidei. She belongs to the large number of Chinese lay Catholics—far more numerous than the foreign missionaries—who were killed in the summer of 1900.

Material gathered for the later beatification presents her as a widow of simple piety who encouraged her children and fellow Christians to remain steadfast. No independent contemporary narrative of her last words or of a particular miracle at her death has become a standard part of the public record; the Church’s recognition rests on the fact of her killing for the faith and on the testimony of the local community that preserved her memory. She was not a member of a religious order.

Elizabeth Qin Bian was beatified by Pope Pius XII among the Chinese martyrs of the Boxer uprising. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized her together with 119 companions—Chinese laypeople, clergy, and bishops as well as missionaries from Europe and elsewhere who had died for the faith in China between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries—as the Martyr Saints of China (Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions). Their collective liturgical memorial is 9 July. She is honored as a witness to the faith of ordinary Chinese Catholic families, especially widows and mothers, at a moment of extreme trial for the Church in China.
