Biography

Short Description

Saint Elwen, whose name also appears in the forms Elvan, Elwin and Elwyn, is an early medieval saint whose cult is attested in Cornwall and, more tentatively, in Brittany. No contemporary written source describes his life, and even the century in which he lived cannot be fixed with certainty. Later medieval tradition places him in the fifth or sixth century, the era commonly known as the Age of the Saints, when numerous holy men and women of Irish, Welsh and Breton origin are said to have founded churches in the far south-west of Britain. Modern historians treat the biographical details attached to such figures with great caution, regarding most of them as later attempts to explain existing church dedications and place-names rather than as recoverable historical narrative.

The principal Cornish tradition concerning Elwen is preserved in the late medieval Life of Saint Breaca. According to that text, Elwen belonged to a company of Irish missionaries who crossed the sea to west Cornwall in the company of Saint Breaca. Other members of the same legendary expedition include saints such as Ia of St Ives, Germoe and several others whose names survive in parish dedications around Mount's Bay and the Hayle estuary. Elwen himself became the patron of a church at Hayle, now known as St Elwyn's Church. In 1478 the antiquary William Worcester recorded that the saint's body was then believed to rest in that church. A holy well in the neighbourhood has also been associated with him. These local commemorations constitute the most concrete evidence that a cult of Elwen existed in west Cornwall by the later Middle Ages, even if they do not prove the historicity of the Irish voyage story.

A different figure named Elvan appears in the legendary history of the conversion of Britain. In that account, which is found in later interpreters of Bede, in Geoffrey of Monmouth and in the Book of Llandaff, King Lucius of Britain sends the envoys Elvan and Medwin to Pope Eleutherius in the second century. Scholars regard the Lucius episode as unhistorical, a product of early medieval origin legends, and they do not identify this Elvan with the Cornish parish saint. In Brittany the place-name Elven in Morbihan and certain local dedications have sometimes been linked to the same cult, but the connection remains unproven and may reflect independent homonymous saints or later medieval transfer of relics and legends.

Because so little can be verified, Elwen's feast day is not uniformly recorded. Some later martyrologies and Cornish calendars assign him 22 February; other lists omit him altogether. He was never the subject of a formal process of canonization or beatification at Rome; like the great majority of Celtic saints of the first millennium, he entered the liturgical calendar through local veneration. There is no evidence that he held any patriarchal or papal office, nor any documentary record of a spouse or children. The historical individual, if a single person lies behind the name, was most probably a local monastic founder or missionary whose memory was kept alive by the church that bore his name rather than by a written biography.
