Biography

Short Description

Emanuele Stablum was born on 10 June 1895 in Terzolas, a village in the Val di Sole in Trentino, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He came from a modest rural Catholic family and entered the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Conception, an institute founded in the nineteenth century by Blessed Luigi Maria Monti for the care of the sick, especially those with skin diseases. After religious formation he studied medicine and qualified as a physician, uniting vowed religious life with professional medical service.

He spent his adult ministry chiefly at the Istituto Dermopatico dell'Immacolata in Rome, the dermatological hospital of his congregation. Contemporaries remembered him as a humble, prayerful, and available religious who treated patients without distinction of class and who lived poverty, chastity, and obedience with seriousness. He saw the care of the sick as the concrete expression of his congregation's charism.

During the German occupation of Rome after 1943, the Istituto Dermopatico dell'Immacolata became a place of refuge. Stablum took part in sheltering Jews, political opponents, and others at risk of arrest, providing medical care and assistance with documents. These actions, carried out at personal risk, belong to the documented network of rescue work by religious houses in occupied Rome.

He died in Rome on 16 March 1950 at the age of fifty-four. A reputation for holiness led to the opening of a cause for beatification. After the diocesan inquiry and Roman examination of his life and writings, Pope Francis recognized his heroic virtues in 2020, declaring him Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized and has no assigned liturgical feast or official patronages.
