Biography

Short Description

Emmanuel Lê Văn Phụng (also rendered Emanueli Le Van Phung or Emmanuel Le Van Phung) was a Vietnamese Roman Catholic layman and martyr of the mid-nineteenth century. He lived in southern Vietnam, in the region then commonly called Cochinchina, during the Nguyễn dynasty and the severe anti-Christian campaigns associated with the reign of Emperor Tự Đức. Traditional Catholic accounts give his year of birth as 1796. He was not a priest or a member of a religious order but a married householder of some local standing and means, described in hagiographical sources as a landowner or village notable who used his property and social position to sustain the underground Church. Christianity was at that time prohibited by imperial edict; priests were hunted, and those who sheltered them or refused to trample the cross faced imprisonment, torture, and death.

In this climate Lê Văn Phụng made his household a place of refuge. He is especially linked in the tradition with the Vietnamese diocesan priest Peter Đoàn Công Quý, whom he sheltered so that Mass and the other sacraments could be celebrated in secret. In 1859 the arrangement was discovered. Both men were arrested. Interrogation and torture were applied in the usual manner of the persecution, with the aim of forcing apostasy and the betrayal of other Catholics. Accounts of the Vietnamese Church present Lê Văn Phụng as remaining firm, a married layman who would not abandon the faith even when family ties and worldly goods were set against him. Precise archival detail about the name of his wife and the number and later fate of his children is scarce in widely available sources, but he is consistently remembered as a father of a family rather than as a celibate or a cleric.

On 31 July 1859 Emmanuel Lê Văn Phụng was put to death by beheading at Châu Đốc, together with Father Peter Đoàn Công Quý. He was then about sixty-three years old. His execution belongs to the same wave of killings that, across Tonkin, Annam, and Cochinchina, claimed foreign missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society and the Dominican missions as well as Vietnamese clergy, catechists, and laity. Individual burial places for many of these martyrs were not preserved in a way that later generations could identify with certainty, and no reliably documented tomb is attached to his name in standard references.

He is one of the one hundred and seventeen Martyrs of Vietnam (Andrew Dũng-Lạc and companions) canonized by Pope John Paul II in Rome on 19 June 1988. Their joint liturgical feast in the General Roman Calendar falls on 24 November. Earlier, members of this group had been beatified in several clusters between 1900 and 1951; the specific beatification grouping for Lê Văn Phụng is not stated with uniform clarity in every summary list, though his cult is that of the 1988 canonization. As a lay husband and father who died rather than deny Christ, he is invoked with the rest of the Vietnamese martyrs as a patron of Vietnam and as an example of the role of the laity in keeping the Church alive under persecution. Beyond the core facts of his married state, his hospitality to priests, his arrest, and his beheading at Châu Đốc in 1859, the surviving record remains that of a relatively obscure local notable whose memory was carried by the Vietnamese Catholic community until the universal recognition of 1988.
