Biography

Short Description

Emetherius of Calahorra, whose name appears in Latin sources as Emeterius or Hemeterius and in Spanish as Emeterio, is honoured together with Celedonius (Chelidonius, Celedonio) as a Christian martyr of Roman Hispania. Their cult is centred on Calagurris Nassica, the present-day city of Calahorra in La Rioja, on the Ebro in northern Spain, then in the province of Hispania Tarraconensis. Almost nothing can be established about his birth, family, or early life. The principal ancient witness is the poet Aurelius Prudentius Clemens, who around the end of the fourth century or the beginning of the fifth devoted the opening hymn of his Peristephanon to the martyrs of Calagurris. Prudentius, a lay Christian with close ties to the Ebro valley, presents Emetherius and Celedonius as soldiers who suffered death for the faith in that city. He does not name their parents, birthplace, or the reigning emperor, and he states that a written narrative of their passion had already been lost, so that later ages possessed mainly the local memory of the martyrdom and the veneration of the shrine.

Later Spanish hagiography filled those gaps. Medieval and early modern accounts often describe the two men as brothers, sometimes as natives of Leon connected with the Legio VII Gemina, who refused to sacrifice to the gods, were imprisoned, and were beheaded at Calahorra. Those particulars belong to later legend rather than to third- or fourth-century documents. Historians commonly place the deaths in the persecution under Diocletian and Maximian in the first years of the fourth century, but no contemporary inscription or imperial record confirms a year, and a cautious account must leave the exact date unknown. Beheading is the manner of death most firmly fixed in both Prudentius and the later acts.

The site of execution and burial at Calahorra became a place of pilgrimage. A basilica rose over the tomb, and the later cathedral of Santa Maria de Calahorra took the two soldiers as its dedicatory saints. Prudentius already speaks of the power of their relics. According to a medieval Cantabrian tradition, the heads of Emetherius and Celedonius were carried north during the Islamic conquest of the peninsula and enshrined at Santander (the ancient Portus Victoriae). The cathedral of Santander has claimed those relics and honours the pair as patrons, while Calahorra has retained the association with the place of martyrdom and other remains. The Roman Martyrology and Iberian liturgical calendars commemorate them on 3 March.

Emetherius and Celedonius are the principal patrons of Calahorra and of Santander. They are typically shown as Roman soldiers with palms of martyrdom or the swords of their execution. Because the original acts had disappeared before Prudentius wrote, a reliable biography of Emetherius remains severely limited: military status, martyrdom at Calagurris, the antiquity of the cult there, and joint commemoration with Celedonius rest on the earliest evidence. Kinship, birthplace, the names of judges, and a precise year of death derive from later pious narrative and cannot be verified from independent historical sources.
