Biography

Short Description

Emilià de Vercelli, known in Latin as Aemilianus and in Italian as Emiliano di Vercelli, was a bishop of Vercelli in Piedmont, in northern Italy, during the late fifth and early sixth centuries. He belongs to a poorly documented generation of Italian bishops who held office after the collapse of the Western Roman imperial administration in Italy and during the establishment of Ostrogothic rule under Theodoric. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 11 September with the notice that he was a bishop at Vercelli in Piedmont. Later liturgical calendars and hagiographical compilations commonly assign his death to the year 506, although no contemporary chronicle, letter, or inscription confirms that exact date.

The see of Vercelli had already become prominent in the fourth century under Saint Eusebius of Vercelli, who organized a form of common life among his clergy and took a leading part in the controversy with Arianism. Successors such as Saint Honoratus guided the diocese through the turbulent fifth century. By the time Emilià occupied the cathedra, Vercelli lay within the Ostrogothic Kingdom. The Gothic rulers professed Arian Christianity yet generally permitted the Nicene Catholic hierarchy to continue its work. No surviving source records Emilià’s relations with the Ostrogothic court, any synodal activity, pastoral letters, or specific acts of governance. Unlike Eusebius, he left no writings that have been preserved.

His name was kept in the local liturgical calendars of Vercelli and was eventually received into the Roman Martyrology, which remains the principal official witness to his cult. No medieval life of historical value is known to exist. Later compilers sometimes attributed to him the generic virtues expected of a holy bishop, but such notices cannot be used as biography. He must be distinguished from the far more famous Eusebius of Vercelli and from other saints named Aemilianus or Emilian who were venerated in Spain, Gaul, or elsewhere. The cathedral of Vercelli continued to number him among its sainted bishops, while Eusebius remained the principal patron of the church and city.

Almost every personal circumstance of his life has been lost. It is not possible to state with any reliability where he was born, whether he had followed a monastic vocation before becoming bishop, whether he died a natural death or otherwise, or where exactly he was buried. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the type that developed in the later Middle Ages; his status as a saint rests on ancient local veneration later accepted in the universal martyrology. The liturgical feast on 11 September is the only firmly attested fact associated with his memory. In that restricted but authentic sense he forms part of the long succession of early bishops of northern Italy whose names the Church preserved even after the written record of their lives had vanished.
