Biography

Short Description

Saint Emiliana, also rendered Aemiliana, was a sixth-century consecrated virgin of Rome whose memory is preserved almost exclusively in the writings of her nephew, Pope Saint Gregory the Great. She was the sister of Gordianus, a member of the senatorial order who held the office of regionarius, and therefore paternal aunt to Gregory. The family belonged to the Christian aristocracy of Rome and was related to Pope Felix III. Emiliana had two sisters, Tarsilla and Gordiana. Their lives unfolded in a city and peninsula still marked by the aftermath of imperial collapse, Gothic kingship, and the destructive Gothic Wars of the mid-sixth century.

Emiliana and Tarsilla chose to remain in the family residence rather than enter a public monastery, yet they adopted a rigorously ascetic regimen that Gregory likened to monastic profession. They practiced fasting, kept long hours of prayer, and dressed with simplicity, living as consecrated virgins within the domestic sphere. Gordiana at first shared this way of life but later abandoned it and married, a turn that Gregory records with regret. The household on the Caelian Hill thus became, for two of the sisters, a private cloister amid the civic and ecclesiastical life of Rome.

Gregory recounts that Tarsilla died first after a vision in which their forebear Pope Felix appeared and showed her a dwelling of great beauty prepared for her. After Tarsilla’s death she appeared in turn to Emiliana and summoned her to the joys of heaven. Emiliana fell sick and died a few days afterward. These episodes are related in Gregory’s thirty-eighth homily on the Gospels and form the core of the hagiographical tradition. No other contemporary source independently narrates her life, and neither a precise year of birth nor of death has been transmitted; she is known to have lived in Rome in the sixth century.

Later liturgical tradition numbered Emiliana among the saints of the Roman Church. Her feast has commonly been observed on 5 January, and she is sometimes commemorated together with Tarsilla on 24 December. Because she belongs to the era before the centralized papal canonization process of the later Middle Ages, she is counted among the pre-congregation saints whose cult arose from local and papal family memory rather than from a formal decree of canonization. Standard directories do not assign her a distinctive list of patronages, and the location of her tomb is not recorded in the surviving texts.

Through Gregory’s testimony Emiliana remains a representative figure of late-antique Roman household asceticism, a woman of senatorial rank who pursued consecrated virginity without leaving her family’s house, and whose sanctity was proclaimed by one of the most influential pastors of the early medieval Church.
